On this Day: The Barnes Lake Dam Bursts in Toccoa Falls, Ga.

On Nov. 6, 1977, after a week of heavy rain, the Barnes Lake Dam in Toccoa Falls ruptured and unleashed a flood of water that killed 38 people and left a small college town destroyed.

Yikes. Goes to show that more oversight of these types of construction projects is needed.

I am 43 and I remember it. I was in Middle School and ir was Homecoming. My shoes were almost covered in water when we walked into the dance. The dam broke and our phone rang off of the hook.It was terrible. The Woerners lost their mom and a sister in the flood. The remaining family members moved in the house next to me.
