Longs Peak is not for hikers experience or otherwise. Experiened mountaineers-ok. Understand and respect the mountain and weather conditions or there is a very good chance the mountain will kill you. These two women are very lucky.

Having hiked/climbed Longs twice in my teen years, once via now-removed "cable route"(1953), and once via "Keyhole" and "Homestretch"('56), coming down the latter way both times, I can't help being curious as to how rangers "transported the hikers...Wild Basin...to Grand Lake." I would assume "The Narrows" would be too icy or at least too slick from all that rain dripping down; so can understand taking them out via Wild Basin. Did they go up from there as well? If they got themselves down that way, what great skills. But probably foolish to climb the Peak this late in season (yes, I know Enos Mills supposedly climbed it in every month of the year). And while Maine has some challenging hiking/climbing, it's nothing like RMNP.
