Bourassa et al . have suggested that deep convection associated with the Asian monsoon played a critical role in transporting sulfur dioxide associated with the Nabro volcanic eruption from the upper troposphere into the lower stratosphere.

Although convective transport may well loft volcanic SO2 into the lower stratosphere, Bourassa et al. cannot be used as evidence for this process.

Also, "we provided direct evidence of the 13 June plume's horizontal footprint and constrained its altitude effectively above the tropopause. The plume height was corroborated by height-resolved measurements of SO2 and aerosol 1 to 3 days later. MODIS IR imagery 2 hours after eruption onset manifests a signature of explosive volcanic convection breaching the tropopause. These data show that the 12 to 13 June eruption of Nabro was above the tropopause and directly deposited volcanic gas and particles into the lowermost stratosphere and that the Asian monsoon was not responsible for their transport into the stratosphere."
