3 YOUNG BLACK THUGS ARRESTED for GANG RAPE of WHITE WOMAN in JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA

A few years after vicious Five Points gang rape of a WHITE WOMAN, Jacksonville police quietly arrest 3 YOUNG BLACK THUGS

About 4 1/2 years after a vicious gang rape unnerved the Five Points community and the case went cold, a DNA match led Jacksonville police to three suspects.

Stanley Theodore Armitage, 20, Martin Anthony King, 20, and Rakeem Saleem Mitchner, 24, have all been arrested in the October 2009 assault.

According to police reports, a woman was bicycling in the 1500 block of Goodwin Street about 8 p.m. when she was attacked by three young men.

Armitage and King were arrested in January and Mitchner in March. The arrests were not announced by the Sheriff’s Office until the Times-Union inquiries this week.

The Sheriff’s Office said a DNA profile was taken at the scene, but no one matched at the time. After all leads were exhausted, it became a cold case.

In December 2013 police were informed that Armitage, who had been arrested and sentenced to probation for an armed robbery in Oregon, was a DNA match.

Armitage was arrested and this led to the identification of King and Mitchner.

Armitage had a pretrial hearing Wednesday that lasted about two minutes. King and Mitchner are scheduled to be in court Thursday with King having a pretrial hearing and Armitage being arraigned.

All three men are charged with two counts of sexual battery and one count of kidnapping. All remain in jail awaiting trial.

The Sheriff’s Office initially didn’t release information about the Oct. 9 attack until a week later amid media inquiries. Composite sketches of two of the suspects also were provided at that time.

Those sketches became ubiquitous for a while in Five Points businesses The attack startled residents, both for its brutality and the fairly public setting.

Days later, an elderly woman was repeatedly raped and robbed in her Avondale home. The Sheriff’s Office didn’t release information about that suspect’s Oct. 17 arrest until Times-Union follow-up inquiries a week and a half later.

Police at the time said they’ll only release information when they feel the public needs to be put on alert.

The White House will release new guidelines on Tuesday to urge universities to handle sexual assaults more aggressively
and efficiently, The New York Times reported Monday night.
New guidelines, drafted by the task force President Barack Obama launched in January, will include recommendations for anonymous surveys of sexual assault cases every three years starting in 2015, the Los Angeles Times reported. The New York Times reported that the White House will likely call on Congress to make the survey mandatory, enforced legislatively or administratively.
Guidelines are a part of the broader report on sexual assaults. The New York Times said the report will also urge universities to ensure confidentiality of sexual assault reports and that assault prevention training programs will train bystanders on how to intervene.
The task force also plans to launch a web site called NotAlone.gov where enforcement data will be published, the Los Angeles Times reported.
At an appearance at UC Berkeley in early April, Rep. Jackie Speier, D-Hillsborough, said she is planning to introduce federal legislation to strengthen the government’s efforts to combat sexual assault on university campuses. She, along with other legislators, also called for campus safety statistics to be included in the U.S. News & World Report’s annual college rankings.
The renewed push for more aggressive handling of sexual assaults comes after a series of high-profile cases in which students filed complaints against several universities alleging they mishandled cases of sexual assault. At UC Berkeley, 31 current and former students filed federal complaints against the university in late February, alleging officials have not pursued sexual assault cases aggressively enough.
