Well, let me just say that although I do not agree with what these young men may have done, you can not even imagine what they have been through.I, myself, was dating Kendrick Simpson at the time of the shooting and was with him in the days after the shooting completely oblivious to anything that had, or may have happened.Let me also say in his defense that he is a very caring, loving, giving, and decent man. He took care of me when I really needed someone, and for that I am eternally grateful. He is an amazing individual who has been through an enormous amount of hurt, loss, grief, anger, change, and stress. So keep the state of one's being at the time after such a disaster in mind before you hang them out to dry or judge them. Although I do not excuse, nor could I possibly understand, I defend his soul, his heart, and his ability to love.
He is not the monster the media made him out to be. He is the type of person who tries to help others around him, especially those he cares about. Still to this day, I can not even fathom him harming another human being. That is a side of him, that if truly exists, I was never shown.

Kendrick Simpson, my main man .. I first met Simpson in DeQuincy,La.-in prison, both of us were young black males whom had committed crimes.. Without excuses I guess you can say we were products of our environment..
The last time I talked to Simpson was a few months after I had been released-I was incarcerated for ten years.. He had just gotten shot by some guys in his neighborhood with an AK47.. He told me he had almost died, but for reasons unbeknown to he pulled through.. After all that life has challenged him with ..
Now this-two death sentences plus life-Damn !!!
The reason I write this letter is because he found me some how; to my amazement-I just received a letter from him today.. Kendrick has always been a good dude, just misguided as most young black men are who get mesmerized with the street life at an early age..

I have not spoken to Kendrick in five long years. I have since moved on with my life, but not a day goes by that I don't think of him. That is the kind of person he is. He is the type of man that you can't help but love. He is in my prayers every night. I pray God gives him strength, patience, and faith that this decision will be overturned. I pray that God brings him out of this to complete whatever plan he had in place for him when he survived being shot years earlier. I pray that he can forgive me for not being strong enough to stay, and I pray that he knows that I will always love him. I also pray for his family. I would just like everyone to know that even out of tragedy, can come beauty and change. It is not right for anyone to take the life of another human being. Doing so under the costume of justice is not only just as wrong, but very contradictory. I still can't imagine this beautiful soul harming another person. I will continue to pray for him and his loved ones. Hopefully one day, we will sit next to each other again sharing a supreme pizza with jalepenos on half of it. I miss you and love you still.

I just think back to myself....what if, I would have went with him that night. What if, I had told him not to go. I hope he knows how much I miss him and what a truly great person he is!!!
