What took the authorities so long to act. Nearly 100 Memphians have lost their lives to violence so far this year. Mass arrests beat a funeral Mass anyday. IN my humble opinion they should continue locking away gang members until the streets are again safe for law abiding tax payers!

If this were just a law enforcement issue, I would agree with the opinion that it is about time that the authorities have taken action. However, this is a community issue that starts in the home with irresponsible parents and out of control kids. In order to take back our streets we have to first take back our own homes as parents. That role has been diminished throughout the years as children have children and the level of respect required by a parent and demanded by our schools and society no longer exists. Once upon a time people feared the consequences of their actions. That fear is no longer a deterrent for criminals and thugs. If the idiots in this city are going to kill one another they are going to do it rather a police officer or a politician tells them to stop or not. In general, the citizens in Memphis and I dare say the majority of every place I have lived or visited over the past 10 years have become increasingly more rude and oblivious to the feelings or opinions of others. People, again in general, are too busy in their own lives to take their actions under consideration when speaking or dealing with others. So, if we really want to talk about stopping the violence we have to offer a better solution than town hall meetings and "Blue Crush" operations. They all serve a purpose, but we have to put fear of consequences back in to the hearts of those committing the crimes and it starts in the home and in our own communities!

I don't think stereotypes really applies to gangs dude. If you say you're in a gang, you can expect to be looked down upon by a regular citizen who obeys the law. Considering in most states being associated with a gang is against the law.

If u really want to know everyone who says their in a gang are not in one if you new anything about VL you wouldn't say the things you say. The killing come from wannabe that think thats what this is about ,but than that all the bad thing that happen on the street people wanna say ohh its must be one those VL's or GD's no! Iwant be blame for some stupid person who think hes bad because hes/she has a gun. All the bad is shown ,but what about the good things we do community service, we make sure that kids go to school and even do thing to help in many ways. We have been labeled as outcast but if you took the time to check our history you will be surprised. signed someone special

In the 1960s the Conservative Vice Lords transformed themselves from a street gang into an organization devoted to the economic and social empowerment of the African American community in Lawndale, Illinois.
Their story has been largely forgotten and their accomplishments remain hidden from the present generation. A majority of Chicagoans are unaware of the momentous events that took place in one of Chicago's poorest Black neighborhoods
The CVL proved that young Black people from the streets can unite and build a better future. They also showed that their steps forward would be vehemently opposed by the white political establishment
This is the pictorial story of their successes and of one of the greatest lost opportunities in the history of America. From the pages of "Shattered Dreams." Try reading it!

i'm a member of the 4's here in chicago, age 25 degree in finance, and making over 45k in corporate. i think what my man was trying to say is that you'll still claim it as part of you even though you may have matured beyond the dark side. like you may even still live in the neighborhood.

I have a better idea for gang members; but some consider my views a bit "extreme". Enforce old biblical law. EXECUTE them. What you waste taxpayer monies keeping them in jail where they get free room and board and medical care the rest of us would like to have? T.Vs, exercise rooms, don't have to work for a living? Jeez, that sounds like paradise to me except for the fact that you are caged like the animal you are. But then why insult the animals. THEY at least don't know any better and they treat others who treat them well the same way.

I would ask those who oppose the death penalty this:
which is more compassionate? SAVING a criminal from him/herself and others by teaching them that they can go to prison for a free ride while ordinary citizens are at their mercy? Or simply ridding the earth of the nonrepentant so that the rest of the law abiding world doesn't have to worry about their innocent children being taken; and then have to pay for the *(& incarceration?

Somebody has a misplaced sense of compassion.

Misti, you have an EXCELLENT point. Unfortunately the depth of it cannot be discussed here. You are 100% correct.
