As distasteful as this is, whenever the police use deadly force, they have to make a comment, even if it is to say that they are investigating the circumsyances of the incident. Not to say anything invites immediate mistrust, and in this day and age the public already is distrustful of any police action or inaction.

Very sad and frightening! Do I need to be armed in my yard in case one of my dogs starts barking? Really the big, tough RLB cops were afraid of a puppy? Shoot first, is that how it works here? Couldn't they have called animal control to catch the puppy? Maybe given the owner time to retrieve his puppy?

Round Lake used to be a great town. The police were friendly, they interacted with everyone in the community, familys were close, neighbors helped each other out, everyone knew everyone, it was a nice place to live and raise a family. That was before the mexicans took over the entire area. It makes me sick to see how drugs and gangs have taken over this town. The whites are now the minority. Whats worse is the cops know who these gang bangers are, they know who's selling drugs, but yet nothing is changing for this town. The schools are a joke, the town looks beat up and run down, its horrible. Round Lake needs to take at look at how Antioch runs their town, zero tolerance for gangs and drugs, they have one major bust after another, they are making it clear, that if you mess around in Antioch, your going to get caught. Round Lake on the other hand, turns the other way and does nothing. Clean up that town and get rid of these losers, instead of shooting puppies. Seriously, a puppy is what you see as a threat ????? Every original family has moved out of round lake, no one in their right mind would want to live in a town where theirs overkill of cops, who do nothing to better the community and make it safe for anyone. Why do they have such a huge police presence, yet nothing changes ?? Answer that !!!!

This is horrific! I think the police should have called animal control, isn't that why we have animal control for situations like these?! 4/5 gunshots for a dog??? Hello round lake police, focus on gangs and illegals!! Round lake is such a shit hole!! Can't wait to get out of this town!!!

As usual reports from the newspaper aren't always correct. They base their information off of people who call them to report a story. First of all, the "puppy" was not a puppy. The picture that was provided to the newspaper was of the dog when it WAS a puppy. It was a grown adult dog barking and charging towards the police officer (this dog btw has had numerous complaints against it prior to this incident). Let me ask you this, if a dog was grawling and charging after your child, would you wait until the police calls in the animal control who may take a while to get to the scene? Or would you want the police officer to take actions immedietly to save your child from being mauled??? Of course you would so why is it any different if it's charging after a police officer? Do you really think these cops who have dogs of their own want to kill a dog right away? I'm sorry but i have seen police rescue dogs who were not charging after them and placed them in their own cars until pet control got there. It's the owner's fault for not watching his dog. I can't even walk with my own children in the neighborhood with all these loose dogs running around. I just never know if they are aggressive or not. When I walk my dog i'm always carrying a metal pole. I won't think twice to kill another dog if it's going to hurt me, or any of my family members including my pets. My first instinct to act first to save myself then worry about the life of the dog. I'm sorry, I love dogs but if mine got out and charged at someone aggressively it would be MY fault not the actions of the police officer.

"Townsend was cited by Lake County Animal Control earlier this year when he lived in Hainesville for failing to confine a biting dog and failure to have the dog vaccinated, said Robin Van Sickle, program coordinator of animal care and control.

That was in March, and then in April he was cited again. He relinquished the dog to authorities and it was euthanized. The dog had bitten other dogs in the neighborhood"

The dog was less then a year old which makes it still a pup!!! Other actions could have been taken yes the dog was loud and barking but not being vicious that would b the only reason to kill an animal. The police unfortunately were wrong this time. Sorry I thinks So

The problem is that we have too many idiot irresposible dog owners. Train your damn dogs. The community is tired of your barking dogs, your dogs that poop all over everybody elses lawn, because dogs don't like to crap where they live. The police should shoot some of these dog owners, not the dogs.
