CBS report on Kennesaw, GA.

In my opinion this is proof positive that the armed citizen is a deterrent to crime.

From the PowerLine piece:
"There may, however, be other explanations for these results. Laws may be ineffective due to loopholes and exemptions. The most violent states may also have the toughest gun control measures."

From the CBS report:
"There is no study that attributes having guns within the home as the reason gun violence has gone down."

In my opinion these reports aren't proof positive of anything.

Everyone knows the police cannot be everywhere all the time, especially criminals. I've lived in the same neighborhood for 20 years, everyone I know has at least one working firearm, even if it's only an old single shot rifle or shotgun.

Home invasions are almost unheard of in this area.

Most all of the mass shootings have been in gun free zones, with very little on-site security.

Correlation is not causation. There are countless other factors that could explain no home invasions in your neighborhood - chief among them being that fact that home invasions are extremely rare.

That comes from keeping your hand over your eyes, Dan.

Move it and look at the world around you.

Schools, theaters, shopping malls, are for the most part, all gun free zones. These places have been the target of choice. Most of these have happened in states that are not 2nd Amendment friendly.

Also, most of the shooters in the recent mass shootings were known to have mental issues, in some cases they were terrorist like the Boston bomber, or the first Fort Hood shooter. I must mention Fort Hood Army Base is for all practical purposes, a gun free zone because the Soldiers are not allowed to carry loaded firearms while in garrison.

Schools have been gun-free zones since the 1990s, which applies to primary and secondary schools. Businesses and other locations are gun-free on a case-by-case basis as the owners choose.

In 2012, one of the seven mass shootings happened at a school. The rest were at a theater, a business, a cafe, a temple, a sauna, and a university.

In 2011, none of the three mass shootings happened at a school. Those shootings occurred at a grocery store, a restaurant, and a beach.

The mass shooting in 2010 happened at a beer distributor.

In 2009 none were at a school. They were at a coffee shop, a military base, a civic center and a nursing home.

In 2008, no mass shootings happened at a school. They were at a factory, a lecture hall, and a city council meeting.

So going back five years there has been only one mass shooting out of eighteen that happened in a gun-free zone. That isn't "most" by any definition of the word.

I fully support adequately funding the US mental health system in order to help people with mental illness get well and to keep those who are dangerous from having access to firearms and other weapons.
