It's sad it happened but the officer was in search of the missing child and had a right to look in that yard while searching. If the aggressive dog threatened the officer's safety, he wasn't about to wait until an attack or mauling to take action. Same as if a vicious acting dog was running towards you and your family in a public place. You take protective action to avoid the attack. Mace first, pistol second. Far to many people have been seriously injured by a dog that the owner says" Oh ,he won't bite" . They are right because one shouldn't give them that chance.
