Obama: America needs "soul searching" on gun violence

Aug 6, 2012 Full story: Reuters 1,137

President Barack Obama said on Monday that mass killings like the shooting rampage at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin were occurring with "too much regularity" and should prompt soul searching by all Americans, but he stopped short of calling for new gun-control laws.

I think I read somewhere that the Fed will now pay 100% health care costs for the first responders that have cancer. Is that true?
Here is the latest :

Federal government acknowledges Ground Zero-cancer link for first time

By Judson Berger

Published September 10, 2012

FoxNews.com

The federal government for the first time Monday acknowledged a link between the toxic conditions at Ground Zero after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks and several different kinds of cancer.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released a final rule officially recognizing that first responders and others at the World Trade Center site could have gotten cancer from the exposure. The move means cancer victims will be able to apply for federal compensation from the $2.8 billion fund established under the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act.

"The publication of this final rule marks an important step in the effort to provide needed treatment and care to 9/11 responders and survivors through the WTC Health Program," John Howard, director of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, said in a statement.

Those applying will still have to go through a certification process with the government to determine whether their medical condition is deemed linked to exposure at Ground Zero.

Click to read the final rule defining which types of cancer may be covered under the compensation fund.

More than a dozen types of cancer -- including skin, breast, stomach and colon cancer -- are potentially covered under the compensation fund. The fund already covered conditions like asthma, post-traumatic stress disorder and a range of lung and airway disorders.

Sheila Birnbaum, special master of the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund, released a brief statement Monday afternoon explaining how the process going forward will work. She said anyone diagnosed with one of the cancers listed in the final rule can apply for compensation but will have to meet certain criteria like proving a "physical presence at one of the crash sites between September 11, 2001 and May 30, 2002."

Despite more potential victims qualifying as a result of the government's decision, the size of the compensation fund is not expected to increase.

Congress has allocated a fixed amount of $2.775 billion for victims. Of that,$875 million can be distributed in the first five years of the program -- the rest can be paid after that.

According to 2010 statistics from the New York State Department of Health, nearly 350 first responders from 9/11 had died of cancer at the time.

Lol. You accuse me of being paranoid instead of answering the questions. Nice display of avoidance and smoke & mirrors.
I'm glad you were saved by talented ER folks. That means they were prepared. Or, I guess according to you, they were paranoid that people might get shot.

One has nothing to do with the other.

The Iraq war was a disaster ,it never should have happened.

BUT

That does not excuse Clinton.

I do not know why you would even post that notion.

The "you" in the statement was the plural version, meaning all of you republicans. You (the individual) appear to support the GOP and I suspect you probably are a republican. Since the Pat Act was passed and signed by the party I think you support, then the "you" fits. Now if you are not a republican, then perhaps not.

As to being too scared to live free, I continue the same assumptions as before. The Pat Act was a simple trade, freedom for the illusion of security. I believe the only people who would sign on to such a bill, and support the party of such a bill would be those who value safety much more than freedom and are thus ready and willing to make that trade.

If you have any doubts about the Pat Act removing all our freedoms, I suggest you read it. Don't stop at the beginning, read the whole thing. At first it talks about imprisoning non-citizens, but later talks about imprisoning citizens if the government wants to make an accusation.

This is not to let the democrats off the hook. The leader of the democratic party, Obama, extended the Pat Act instead of killing it. Additionally he passed NDAA which further enshrined our loss of freedom.

I won't support any politician or political party that supports the Pat Act. I refuse to support anyone who claims the US should not have freedom.

Liberals who want more and more gun control are retarded! Criminals and whackjobs who decide they want to go on a killing spree will always find a way to get guns, so how does gun control help by taking guns away from honest, law-abiding citizens?

We should be talking about a country full of people who should have been armed & trained because as every mass school shooting proves gun control only disarms innocent victims. Crazy killers do not obey gun laws and all fascist states begin with victim disarmament. In America guns are used to prevent MANY times more crimes then they are used to commit. It's true! A gun free country is a crime ridden pipe dream. Tyrants will not be disarmed.

I direct you to the story of Suzanna Gratia Hupp:

On Wednesday, October 16, 1991, Hupp and her parents were having lunch at the Luby's Cafeteria in Killeen. She had left her gun in her car to comply with a new Texas gun control law at the time, which prohibited carrying a concealed weapon. When George Hennard drove his truck into the cafeteria and opened fire on the patrons, Hupp instinctively reached into her purse for her weapon, but it was in her vehicle. Her father, Al Gratia, tried to rush Hennard and was shot in the chest. As the gunman reloaded, Hupp escaped through a broken window and believed that her mother, Ursula Gratia, was behind her. Hennard put a gun to her mother's head as she cradled her mortally wounded husband, and pulled the trigger, killing her as well.

Hupp's mother and father were killed along with twenty-one other people. Hennard also wounded some twenty others. As a survivor of the Luby's massacre, Hupp testified across the country in support of concealed-handgun laws. She said that if there had been a second chance to prevent the slaughter, she would have violated the Texas law and carried the handgun inside her purse into the restaurant.

----

Here is a woman that had the training, the know how, and the will to use her gun. If she had been allowed to carry her gun, both her parents would have survived, along with many others.

Gun control never works. Potentially many massacres could be ended faster and with less death if decent people were allowed and encouraged to carry for purposes of defending themselves and others.

On the other side, as I mentioned, criminals are always going to find a way to get guns, so lets be realistic? How can anyone be stupid enough to think gun control works?

Heck, some massacres could be diverted completely. A would-be killer might think twice if there was a very good chance of an armed citizen being there.

You would be incorrect in your assumption. I am an Independent. I am backing Romney in this election because Obama has failed in every endeavor to keep a promise to America. I am more conservative in my thinking but think there is enough common ground for conservatives and liberals to agree on and move forward utilizing a third party eventually.
I do not agree with or support the patriot act.
I'm not a G.W. Bush fan. I also think 3.75 years into Obama's Presidency, it's time for him to start taking responsibility rather than blaming Bush.
I seriously think after all the Obama travel, when Air Force One needs an oil change, it's Bush's fault.

Psssst...while Bush may have had the big chair back in 2001, the Democrats were in control of Congress. So this was not just an "all you republicans" thing.

I can understand not backing Obama. I don't back Obama. I will not vote for him. There were a great many things I wanted him to fix; things the bush/Clinton/Bush/Reagan presidencies put in place that need changed. However, expecting Romney to change any of them is beyond belief. I expect Romney to be bush part 3. Wars, attacks on our nation, furthering of the depression, elimination of even more rights, more economic attacks on the middle class, higher and higher federal debt;and on and on. My question to you would be, why would you vote for him, why give support for those who installed policies you don't approve of?

As to conservative thinking, the term conservative has much baggage and means very different things to different people. I really don't know what you mean by it. When I hear others, self-proclaimed conservatives, running up the federal debt beyond all reasonableness and then call for austerity I wonder what they are thinking. When I see that the rich got tremendous gain from the wild spending, and the middle class got nothing, I understand, they want the middle class to pay for the gigantic benefits for the idle rich. Just about everything I have seen self-proclaimed conservatives do results in more money for the rich, and fewer rights for the middle class.

Just so you know, I observe that Obama is so conservative that he should change his political affiliation to republican before the election.
