Iowa teen moves forward after family dumps him

There are 350 comments on the www.desmoinesregister.com story from Jun 10, 2011, titled Iowa teen moves forward after family dumps him. In it, www.desmoinesregister.com reports that:

Ben Alley misses his parents. He's 18 and just graduated from East Marshall High School in Le Grand, with scholarships to almost cover his costs at the University of Iowa. It's a time for open houses and pride. But he won't be getting that from his once-close family - the Southern Baptist minister father and the mother who home-schooled him early on.

They're not dead; he's dead to them. In sophomore year, Ben informed his parents that he is gay. They informed him he wouldn't be coming home after school the next day - or ever again.

Curteese and Hi hi, Thank you both! However It was not bravery that motivated me. It was being under a full blown case/episode of "Gender Hell". Only a Trans person knows what "Gender Hell" is like. That's when a Trans person is so desparate about the incongruaty of their situation that they will do almost anything to stop it. That might was a cry for help that my parents failed to heed. It was in 1957 and I was around 12/13 YO. The state of Gender Hell is an extreme anxiety that we suffer from when we're denied expression. I'm convinced that most Trans people do the most desparate things while in this state. I believe that this is when TSes commit suicide. I believe that this is when TSes do their DIY Orchiectomies in the bathtubs or similiar things.
Thank you both for your kind words!

On SHO time they are showing "Tales of the City" and Mrs. Madrigal came out to her daughter on last night's show. How wonderful this should come up today. 1957! Good lord, you were so far ahead of your TIME!

One of the greatests TS women to have ever lived is Lynn Conway , google Lynnconway.com She was born in 1938, Renee Richards was born in 1935. I was born a little later. Lily Elbe was born about 1900 along with Virginia Prince. Christine Jorgenson was born in 1929. I am hardly before my time. But it's nice to hear anyway. I used to watch Maupin's "Tales of the city" when it ran on Bravo a few years ago but I don't know the character of Mrs. Madrigal.

Really! Mrs. Madrigal is the one the Tales revolve around! They are playing them on SHO 2 nightly now. In his latest book, he revisits the old characters and introduces a female to male TS who looks on Mrs. Madrigal as a prophet.

If you have been at this since 1957, you would be in Mrs. Madrigal's time frame. I urge you to read the books again, I think you may get a kick out of them.

On every trip I make to San Francisco, I seek out Barbary Lane. I figured out pretty quickly that is a bogus name, but with careful deducting of other streets he mentioned being near Barbary Lane, and its physical description, I figured out it is Macondry Lane, near Pacific Heights. Walking up the long stairway to the Lane made me almost weepy. It is FAR more grand than anything Mrs. Madrigal could have afforded, but hey, it's willing suspension of disbelief, isn't it?

it's funny to me that so called "Christians" have never taken the time to read the bible..

Jesus, tired out by his journey, was sitting by the well. It was about noon.
A Samaritan woman came to draw water,
and Jesus said to her,“Give me a drink.”
The Samaritan woman said to him,
“How is it that you, a Jew, ask a drink of me, a woman of Samaria?”
Jesus answered her,“If you knew the gift of God,
and who it is that is saying to you,‘Give me a drink,’
you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.”
The woman said to him,“Sir, you have no bucket, and the well is deep.
Where do you get that living water?
Are you greater than our ancestor Jacob, who gave us the well?”
Jesus said to her,“Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again,
but those who drink of the water that I will give them, will never be thirsty.
The water that I will give will become in them
a spring of water gushing up to eternal life.”
The woman said to him,“Sir, give me this water,
so that I may never be thirsty or have to keep coming here to draw water.”
Jesus said to her,“ Go, call you husband, and come back.”
The woman answered him,“I have no husband.”
Jesus said to her,“You are right in saying,‘I have no husband’;
for you have had five husbands, and the one you have now is not your husband.
What you have said is true!”
The woman said to him,“Sir, I see that you are a prophet.
Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain,
but you say that the place where people must worship is in Jerusalem.”
Jesus said to her,“Woman, believe me,
the hour is coming when you will worship God
neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.
You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know,
for salvation is from the Jews.
But the hour is coming and is now here,
when the true worshipers will worship God in spirit and in truth.
God is spirit, and those who worship God must worship in spirit and in truth.”
The woman said to him,“I know that Messiah is coming.
When he comes, he will proclaim all things to us.”
Jesus said to her,“I am the one.”

I have never heard of the term 'Gender Hell' until you posted about it. I'm happy to learn something new and glad you're here!

For the lack of a better term, I created this neologism for what I was periodicaly going through. Then I asked my Therapist what exactly it was. He was the one who described it in more technical terms, as extreme anxiety. I suffered from these all my life until I began transition. Once I began presenting to the world exactly who Terry was, This anxiety reduced itself to almost nothing. I still have residual symtoms, but they are much less in frequency and intensity.

OK I'm recalling some of it. Mrs Magdrigal was a Fully transistioned, MtF TS who owned an apartment house or something? I wasn't really into it, it was the first I had heard of Maupin, and I was watching only sporadically. With the package I have, I don't think I get SHO Time. I do have Bravo, Ovation, Current, and Logo.

Pick up one of the books, you may get a giggle. I saw Maupin being interviewed once and he said a fan wrote and asked him if Anna Madrigal's name was an anagram for "A man and a girl". When Maupin made up the name,he had NO idea that it turned out to be the anagram. In the next book, he used that name as part of the story, however.

I'm glad you talked to your therapist, knowlede turn those inexplicable dark mysteries into understandable problems that can be dealt with. That's a major load off of anyone's shoulders.
