American Civil Liberties Union

There are 107 comments on the www.aclu.org story from May 13, 2011, titled American Civil Liberties Union. In it, www.aclu.org reports that:

So long as we have enough people in this country willing to fight for their rights, we'll be called a democracy. -- ACLU Founder Roger Baldwin

The ACLU is our nation's guardian of liberty, working daily in courts, legislatures and communities to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties that the Constitution and laws of the United States guarantee everyone in this country.

These rights include:

Your First Amendment rights - freedom of speech, association and assembly; freedom of the press, and freedom of religion. Your right to equal protection under the law - protection against unlawful discrimination. Your right to due process - fair treatment by the government whenever the loss of your liberty or property is at stake. Your right to privacy - freedom from unwarranted government intrusion into your personal and private affairs. The ACLU also works to extend rights to segments of our population that have traditionally been denied their rights, including people of color; women; lesbians, gay men, bisexuals and transgender people; prisoners; and people with disabilities.

If the rights of society's most vulnerable members are denied, everybody's rights are imperiled.

The U.S. Supreme Court had yet to uphold a single free speech claim when Roger Baldwin, Crystal Eastman, Albert DeSilver and others formed the ACLU in 1920. Activists languished in jail for distributing anti-war literature. State sanctioned violence against African Americans was routine. Women won the right to vote only in August of that year. Constitutional rights for lesbians and gays, bisexual and transgender people in those days were unthinkable.

LOL! Asking that a nativity scene be taken down is hardly a terrorist act.

Making threats is a terrorist act. The local citizens do not want the ALCU here. The ALCU is attacking the citizens of Paragould.

My goodness, we have a lot of debate with strong language here. Everyone is entitled to his opinion without the negativity. What I would like to see is more people coming together for the common good of all. It's a tall order yet highly possible.

Has anyone heard of Jacque Fresco? I watched the documentary and he has excellent solutions to the problems faced by our society today. It's no longer on Netflix but they have some clips on the website. Go to http://magicofdoing.com/venuscafe and scroll down to the bottom of the page.

You'll see Mr. Fresco explain the details of a resource-based economy and how it will improve the lives of everyone over and above the present monatary-based economic system we currently endure.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but not their own facts.

There is a great deal of misinformation out there about the ACLU, mainly from the religious Right.

Much like Creationists, the vast majority of these anti-ACLU opinions are not based in fact, but no amount of evidence refuting the opinions will be accepted by these people.

They aren't interested in the facts, only in bleating their ideology. They will say with a straight face - and even believe their own lies - when they are shown evidence of that the ACLU actually does. They dismiss it out of hand, or claim it is false (without proof) or otherwise just respond to the evidence with some kind of nutty conspiracy theory.

Just read this thread. It's a big steaming pile of bullshit.
