Yeah, I noticed that later on. I'll have to read it and then I'll perhaps make a comment about it.

Well, I have now read the on-line article. I assume it is the same as the one in the New Yorker. I wouldn't think that it is that large a setback. It's merely a stumbling block at the moment. However, those marriages will be recognized by the Feds, if not the state. I am confident that we will win in the end. Time and demographics are on our side.

Utah--you just might have managed to rip defeat from the maw of victory.
You're stuck at 17, and nothing matters until the Supreme Court deals with that trial judge who put an F-U to its senior-most Justice in his universally derided decision.
What makes you think Justice Scalia controls the SCOTUS? He's only one justice, and the one in the minority on the decision overturning DOMA. That said, even Scalia admitted in his dissent that the DOMA ruling justifies overturning all the state bans.

His prediction is coming true.

MAKE NO MISTAKE, UTAH WAS A HUGE SETBACK
12-Year-Old Boy Speaks Up for Gay Moms and Marriage Equality
http://shine.yahoo.com/author-blog-posts/12-o...

Here's a kid any parent would be proud of.
Protesters took to the state capitol in Salt Lake City to rally against Utah Governor Gary Herbert's decision not to recognize same-sex marriage in the state. One of the most moving people to give a speech to the hundreds-strong crowd was 12-year-old Riley Hackford-Peer, who spoke about his experiences having two moms.
"I'm here today to talk about love, family and equal rights," said Riley. "Some people do not believe that I'm from a loving family because my moms are gay. They are wrong. I love my moms, and my moms love me and my brother, unconditionally."
He says that seeing his mothers get married in December was the second happiest day of his life - the first being when his little brother was born. "It felt like fireworks bursting in my heart," he says.
"The funny thing is, nothing really changed," he continues. "We're still a family, and we all love each other. The only difference is now they have equal rights."
"Governor Herbert wants to treat my moms unfairly," he says. "He says he wants to 'protect families.' But I want to tell him that my family deserves protection, too. I have two moms -- and I love them. And they deserve to have their marriage recognized everywhere."
Hours after this rally took place, the federal government announced that it would recognize same-sex marriages performed in Utah, overriding Herbert's decision. Unfortunately, last week, the U.S. Supreme Court put a halt to same-sex marriages in Utah until a federal appeals court has ruled on the state ban, however, with the huge strides that gay marriage has made in the U.S. in the last year, Utah's days of inequality are surely numbered.

I agree with ya.......now the question is will the 10th combine the appeals from both States and rule on them together by this Summer.......or do them separately? We will have to wait and see........and if both States should lose at the 10th, there is a likelihood that they will appeal to SCOTUS and I'm not sure SCOTUS will grant them an appeal.....again, we will have to wait and see....but it will be interesting going forward because we could also gain the ENTIRE 10th territory if we win, which will include both Utah and Oklahoma as well as Wyoming, Kansas and Colorado......just a thought looking towards the future!!!

Someone help me here. The Federal Govt can't discriminate against gays and lesbians but folks think States can.

Does that mean that individual States have a right to spy on us, read our mail etc like the NSA was doing?

It's clear that many don't understand the limitations of States' Rights.

Article 4 clears that up.
This Constitution, and the laws of the United States which shall be made in pursuance thereof;... shall be the supreme law of the land; and the judges in every state shall be bound thereby, anything in the Constitution or laws of any State to the contrary notwithstanding.

The Senators and Representatives before mentioned, and the members of the several state legislatures, and all executive and judicial officers, both of the United States and of the several states, shall be bound by oath or affirmation, to support this Constitution;.."

It's strange that when discussing marriage between two consenting adults you immediately think about sex with children.

Actually Illinois was #17. Utah would be 18 & Oklahoma 19. Adding the rest of the 10th circuit gets us to 22.

Whoever thought we'd have trouble keeping track of the number of states with marriage equality?!

Don't feel bad, I had to count twice before I figured out their error.

I just look forward to the day none of us has to count states- we can just say ALL 50!

I was talking about discrimination. You're discussing decriminalization. Surely anyone professing to be a "scholar" understands the different meaning of the two turns.

No, I don't think pedophilia (or rape, or murder, or any other crime of against a non-consenting human being) is okay. If you have committed such a crime, or been the victim of one, consult the proper authorities and professionals who can help you make restitution or achieve resolution.
