The person in the story is Trans not gay, but the story rings true the suicide rate among GLBT is high, in the trans commiunity suicide rate for preops is 31% and a full 50% of us have attempted suicide by our 20th birthday, I work as a supevisor on a TG support and suicide prevention site, doing suicide prevention chats, we help on avarage 6-8 people every day. Most people are depressed becasue they dont feel they are "normal" and they get told they are sinners and are going to go to hell, and they get made fun of, their familys disown them, their friends leave them. It is really horrible what other people are capable of when it comes to someone who is diffrent.

I worked a suicide line many years ago and yes, it is unbelievable what people are told when they aren't "fitting in". There was a guy who was going to kill himself because he had to have a colostomy bag and he couldn't take the teasing by his own family.

GLBT teens are especially at risk because they often have that same negative self-image created by their own family. Transgenders are probably the highest risk because people don't even understand what they are talking about, much less what they are feeling and the lie they often feel they are living. Talks like this to teens are wonderful.

I think we should start trying to specify what percentage of these attempts are by youth who aren't out and what percentage of these attempts are by those who are out.

There's no safety in the closet.

(And the closet also makes your blindly quoted stats problematic.)

Jessica, I almost took myself out with a .410 once. That was a low point. I decided I didn't want to die, I wanted to live, but I wanted life on my terms. As I said, it was a low point from which I could only go up. It wasn't an overnight conversion, but I gradually came out of my shell and cared less and less about who knew what. Most importantly, I realized that I wasn't reacting to "me", I was too worried about what others might think of me. Life got much easier when I stopped caring.
regards, Terry

I've been on Effexor from http://goo.gl/PJZwMF only one week but am cautiously very optimistic. Prior to this I was on citalopram but still feeling very low and sleeping poorly, feeling like I needed to be in bed 12-16 hours a day. Now I am waking naturally after only 8 hours sleep and finding it much easier to concentrate at work. I can hardly believe it is working so quickly but I feel so much better. I've had no side effects.
