As a Transexual myself, I disagree with this. I know that this can be a hot button issue, but I believe that the child should be given every chance to develop as a male. Nine years old is way before puberty and there are puberty stalling drugs that will hold off the changes.( I didn't see anything in the article about what drugs "she" will receive) I'm afraid of this being more of attention seeking parents, than a true Transexual child. I could be wrong, but I hope they'll do what's best for their child, what ever that might be.

Terry as a transwoman myself if afforded this at a younger age I would have jumped at the chance. These are medications to delay the onset of puberty until they can make a better informed decision as the child matures. This is 100% reversible and in no way is harmful to the child. On the other hand making this child go through puberty as a male when she clearly identified as a female can have life long effects that may not be able to be corrected. Not to mention the distress and dysphoria that come with it. Every child reaches puberty at ages between 9 and 12. No doctor is going to prescribe something that isn't needed. This process is at the forefront of treating children with gender Identity issues.

Rea. I must have missed it where it said puberty blockers. I thought it said h ormones. My mistake! I would have leapt at it too, especially knowing what I now know. But it was unheard of in the 1950s. And maybe I should have chosen my words more carefully. When I said develop as a male, I was thinking mentally, not physically. A couple of more years as that role should make it clear which is the desired gender and remove all doubts. With the hormone blockers of course.
