Two Mountain Lions were spotted but not authenticated crossing 95 near Oak Ridge. Rumor of Mountain Lion killed by car in Roane County near Harriman. Cat sightings not uncommon near Oakdale. Game camera picture near Roane State College. The game camera info was sent to TWRA but no response from them. I hope this helps.

I'm very interested in this thread and any accounts near the Hamilton/Bradley/Polk/McMinn/R hea/Meigs areas. There's always been a hope that there are cougars in TN but TWRA ardently insists that there are not. While there have been confirmations in nearby states, we have yet to find conclusive evidence of a cougar in TN. While it's not absurd to think that the western or southern populations are beginning to expand, research this far indicates that these are nomadic males in "dispersal mode". Without a female, well, it's just not a population potential. I've talked to the TWRA heads and they have never (from what I was told) maintained any database surrounding reported sightings. Other professionals in the cougar industry have agreed that there are no viable populations here. There's speculation that any cougars potentially in TN are actually released/escaped pets (before we think that is too far out to believe, I've worked with 2 cougars and both were confiscated by TWRA from unauthorized owners).
All that being said, I'm willing to work to confirm cougars in this area if I get enough details where I believe its a cougar and I can actually locate the area. GPS coordinates or something to narrow it down. White Oak or Cherokee Forest is a bit too broad. So, if you have info, I'm all ears (or eyes as the case may be).
We were in the smokies last week May 27, 2013 and I saw a mountain lion at our campground along the creek in Townsend, TN. I was sitting with my husband at our campfire and turned to look to my left towards the creek. It was after 10:00 and most campers were inside. I was told there are no such big cats in the area, but I know what I saw, with a long tail, large, light colored body and it turned to look my way in the porch light, then took off quickly. I was stunned, and if only I had had my camera handy! I did report it to others who looked at me like I was crazy I think. And, no, it was not a bob cat or a big house cat! I know what a cougar, or puma or mt lion looks like. It was probably about 30 feet away from where we sat. I hope others can acually get good pictures of them!

I am a park ranger in the smoky mountains. I have been working in that area for the past 15 years. I have recently heard from some friends in Loudon that there has been a few sightings of a large cat like creature. The sightings occured in the piney community. When told to me, it was said to be a mountain lion. Although there has been 4 sightings of mountain lion in the smoky mountains in the past 15 years, with no photo evidence, it is believed that mountain lions, also known as cougars, have been extinct to this area for many years. I was wondering if anyone else in that area had seen anything that can confirm this.
I've seen it in WV.
We've had rumors of "big cats" that most ppl call
black panther. However the Dept of Natural Resources,
and everyone w/any knowledge of the animals in this
area, will tell you that large cats don't live in
the area.
We've seen this large cat, seen track, and heard it
yell....and yes, a yell is all you can call it.
It sounds like a mix of a yowling baby and a woman
screaming for her life.
Quite chilling.
And it's black. And big. Much bigger than a bobcat.
With a long thin tail.

And unofficially, the TWRA response is that we/they are trying to obtain details for the camera owner. We cant simply go canvas an entire county. If you know who owns it I would be happt to get them in contact with the necessary agengy officials so we can do more.

I just saw a young mountain lion about 100 lbs cross the road in front of me at Windrock Campground in Oliver Springs Tn. I was riding my dirt bike which startled the animal and it ran across the road in front of me. It was a rust like color with black on the ears and tip of the long the tail I could see feint spots on the coat. I could tell it was not a bob cat by it's size. It moved like a larger cat. I have seen African lions, leopards and cheetahs in the wild. This was no bob cat. I now believe they are alive and well in the smokies.

A friend and I saw a mountain lion (I know the difference between them and a bobcat) on the paved road section coming down from the windmills on Buffalo/Windrock mountain. It was swinging its hips as it walked up in front of us in the middle of the road and when it heard us it turned sideways and stared at us for about 3 seconds before leaping into the kudzu on the downhill side of the road! Quite an amazing sight with it's long tail with a very dark tip almost straight of from it's body. Also, it was a very quiet day
On the mountain and we had not seen another person for hours so I guess we literally snuck up on him in our quiet
Minivan on the pavement.

I was raised in campbell county at the foot of caryville mtn and jellico mtn....close to oliver springs....i was 8 years old when my family moved 2 hours south. My papaw done dozer work for a lot of people in the mtns and i heard many many stories of the mtn lions and remember once him talking about seeing a solid black one. I also remember my mom being scared one night that something was outside our house and then i heard it scream. Sounds just like a woman yelling. This all amazed me....i dont remember much about my childhood....41 years old now.....have never heard it in mcminn where i live now. It has to be true!
