Mountain Lion in East Tn?

Hey Stacey - cougars don't normally like town life. As looking as your kids aren't hiking near/in the woods alone they are at no real risk. Same with pets. Because you said it was near a creek, is there a way for your son to go back after sunrise to check for tracks? If he could take a camera and something to allow size perspective (ruler or anything really because a measure of that item later would suffice) it would help ID. If he can, let me know here and I will email you.

We live just east of Johnson City in East TN. My husband was driving in to work early one morning and a deer ran out in front of him. He just stood there so my husband turned off his lights for a second so the deer would move. When he turned his lights back on, there was a large cat with a long tail headed the other way off the road. He figued that he had interrupted an early breakfast for the cougar. That was either in Carter or Washington County, so I feel that there are big cats in East TN at least.

We do not have Mountain Lions "Cougars" in East Tennessee. It is a myth that everyone likes to believe but they are simply not in this area. It funny how every one has seen one jumping over an embankment or heard one while camping on the river bank but with all the hundreds of hunters and ATV riders in the woods year round no one has managed to kill one. Everyone has a story but nobody has actually harvested one because...

It's been dry in my neck of the woods but is there a way you can take a camera and see if there are tracks? You would also need something to set by a track to help determine size. If you do, let me know and I will contact you.

The released cat theory is not just plausible but historically accurate. A number of people have raised mountain lions (either bought from private sellers or captured out West or from Florida) and brought to the area.
Sometimes the owners feel the need to release the cats into the wild. What are some reasons why would they do this? 1) Desire to see local populations of cars 2) Economic issues (feeding & taking care of their cats become burdensome) 3) Fear of getting caught illegally owning such animals/ Fear of legal penalties 4) Desire for animals to be "free".
-If caught, I believe DNA analysis would show such mountain lions originated either from Florida or out West.

I was in the Smoky mountains in 1996, near Knoxville. While driving into the mountain area next to, presumably little river road, suddenly a young mountain lion jumped in front of our car. We were both sure it was a small cat. Not a pet cat, or bob cat or anything else. It had the same colouring as a mountain lion (or Puma).
We have asked about and a park ranger confirmed that sometimes people would release puma's into the wild. He said this was probably the case.

A few nights ago my son was driving home at about 10 pm on Old Alabama Road in Bradley County near Cleveland. He saw a large animal walking toward him on the opposite side of the two-lane road. He was certain that it was not a dog when it stopped and looked up toward him. He slowed nearly to a stop as he passed the animal within a few feet. He said if it had stood right next to his car and lifted its head, it could have seen in the window. It was sleek with a very long tail, moved like a cat, and was black. I might add that he does not drink. A few years ago a neighbor told us she and her daughter had seen what she was certain was a black mountain lion by the edge of the road as they were on their way home from church one night. Would be interested to know if anyone else in the area has seen this.

Sadly there are zero occurences of melanism (genetic expression of all black) in cougars. There have been reports for ages of this but it's never been documented to happen. Maybe one day someone will get a picture and prove us all wrong but until then... granted, Bradley county does have a robust black bear population. Perhaps that is what he saw?

Last night at about 10:30 PM, I was driving on East HWY 40 from Memphis, TN to Nashville. At mile market 130 and just before I got to the TN River, there was a tan mountain lion standing on the side of the road. I got a very good look at it. It was awesome.
