<quoted text>If you have dial up internet service, and you have one of those phone services where you can call anywhere at no charge, you can change your location by going back to where you choose your computer access number, and choose a number that is whereever you wish to appear to be posting from. When you get on the internet, your computer will call that access number, even if it is all the way across the country from you, and Topix will display that city as the place you are calling from. Or near there.
Or if you do get charged for long distance calls, but you want to fool others bad enough, you can do it anyway, and pay the long distance charge, which would not be that much anyway, but be sure to go back to your local access number when you get through posting, or you will have a BIG phone bill.
I wonder why someone "judged" my post to be "spam, clueless, and nuts". The method I told you about WORKS.

Is there anyway to hide the date that you joined? I see some people have it and some don't.

Hi there,
The location that appears with your posts is determined by your internet service provider's location. While we usually get pretty close, we don't always get it right. There is no way to remove this information from your posts, but as a registered user, you may enter your own location on your profile as well.

Hi Again,
It depends entirely on the ISP. If they do not provide the information, it doesn't show up.
The decision was made to include location information to quell trolling in the forums and it has been successful in helping that issue.
Remember that users have the ability to post anonymously with choosing a pseudonym as a user name. Unless their isp location is the South Pole with almost no population, giving their city location should still allow them anonymity.

I realize these "Top Mod" comments were posted over 5 years ago. So, I don't know if it would be possible to get a response from that specific Topix Admin official. But I would appreciate a response from someone in the know.

"Top Mod" Post #3 states that Topix DETERMINES post location display based on ISP location and that Topix doesn't always get it right but is pretty close. "Top Mod" Post #8 states that post location display comes solely from the ISP and if they don't provide the info, Topix must display a blank post location display.

So, here is my question. Which one is it? How exactly does Topix go about it? Those posts seem to imply that Topix intercepts the ISP location info but then may go beyond that and take an additional step or steps to "determine" (pinpoint) a actual location more closely. Some kind posters told me that a change in post location display has to do with whether or not a ISP is getting heavy user traffic at the time of Topix posting OR a roaming ip OR Topix doing something called a reverse DNS lookup. But I'm still kinda confused or naive on this whole thing.

For me, my post location changed one time back in mid 2011 and even my old posts made under the previous post location display show the new one. Grove City, Ohio to Hillsboro, Ohio. I figure maybe it had something to do with perhaps the ISP could possibly have business in more than one city.

But there is real belief out there in Topix land that locations are reworked from time to time by Topix or that Topix did a sweeping attack on the grey trolls by exposing their actual post cities and some of the innocent greys were casualties in all of this. A sweeping attack, to expose actual city location would make sense, given that in your posts you allude to quelling the trolls was the whole reason Topix started to post location display in the first place. Although that sort of sweeping attack sounds invasive, it would only reveal actual user city and not actual home address. So, there's still anonymity. But I wonder if such a thing may be helpful to those who can use a hacking software to scan for ip locations.

I never have used a proxy server. One time before mid 2011 I tried a free sample of one online but I was not able to post a comment on Topix.

I would like a better understanding on this.

Thank you all for taking the time to read this post.

Evidently, a computer's IP number is logged when visiting a web page and this tracking is done by the server of the we page. The thing is that a IP number is like a footprint on the internet that can be used to follow back the location of that computer. A person's actual location! A real right to privacy issue! I wonder if websites incorporate the use of those reverse location DNS lookup services to do this. Anyone know? And this could be what some users on Topix are wary of. When they see their post location display change, and they aren't using a proxy service or software, they may think Topix is adjusting them at or closer to their actual city.

Oh. My user name on this thread. Not to be taken the wrong way. Not trying to imply that Topix is using a computer program to relocate poster locations. Not at all. It's kind of a funny. Poster Relocation Program. Inspired by the Witness Relocation Program. And since this thread is called Changing Location. HA!

Yeah some people have a privatized service provider or they're a direct satellite user. You may need to change your internet brand and quality in that case.
