Hello All,
including and especially YOU, Top Mod!;-)

It just so happens we have a insipid troll on our little forum right now and our once peaceful forum of lovely ladies discussing and chatting has become like a bad "myspace" or "facebook" nightmare, especially for those unsuspecting posters over the past couple of days!

ISP location doesn't work for the "Internet savvy" as it is easily bypassed by ISP blocking software so a bogus location is the order of the day for these trolls.

Of course, there is no way to prove this is happening for a normal user of Topix, that ISP blocking has taken place, but according to the TERMS it is a violation. Also some troll posts are not incendiary enough to warrant a ban based on what is written, however still, the posts are manifested in such a way that is most assuredly wreaking havoc on the normal flow of conversation!

You can tell a troll by the manner in which they are stalking certain posts also.

I have been an editor of the news page of a particular forum for over a year now, and have posted for over two years on this forum. May I offer this suggestion.

Let PROVEN editors have limited capability to keep in check, the forums and set up a reporting system for PROVEN editors as to who we believe to be trolling the forums. Give us a chance to "police" our own forums instead TOPIX having to bare the entire responsibility. At the very least it may prioritize the legitimate complaints and you will not be inundated with a massive amount of e-mails, I am sure a constant thorn for TOPIX???

Thinking "out of the box" here is warranted because this problem is not going to go away anytime soon.

I hope you will consider this and other ideas to fight this insipid problem of Topix.

Thanks

wish mine would stay as one.
Not sure why it changes so much, but it fluctuates.
There is a software that can have your isp displayed or not displayed to whatever you want.
But you must be a major computer wiz to do it, though my friend is cracking it as we speak.

Seems ,judging from the info provided below, Topix management are too busy patting themselves on the back for another good advertising deal than to be seriously concerned that something bad can happen in a small town where several folks get out of hand and become violent against someone who shares
the same isp as an idiot .When this site does become the topic of a national news story aka myspace and it's troubles with pedophiles, and Topix loses it's precious advertisers ,who, after reading this issue has been going on for some time, will things change concerning the isp being displayed

Hi there,
We actually have as much information about an unregistered poster as we do with a registered poster. Posting unregistered only means that other users might not know who you are, but we still do.:)

If that is the case (ISP locations used to quell Trolling),yet you can see all that info from Admin, why make that info public ? A troll is more easily identified by the content of their posts than by the isp location,at least as far as
legitimate users are concerned.

Hi David,

Because hampering the ability for users to deceive OTHER users is the goal for the location information.

On the admin side, we know who is who regardless. This is for the users, not us.

But the problems begin when two users sharing the same isp adress (as I am and apparently others) get confused by folks who think it the same one person using multiple names.

so now there are two registered users, myself and someone else, in the same threads. How does this help users? Perhaps when Topix had only a handful of issues was this a non-issue.However,as the number of users continues to grow.......
How about a random number generator that assigns
a unique number code to each user? From what I understand, the truth is the isp location is imbeded in the OS and probably cannot be changed ...

nearly every website I've ever visited doesn't even rank in the Top 100,000,but Topix does.If the ISP
does not seem to pose a future problem, bandwidth will. It's good to see Topix is hiring some software techs-you'll need 'em

What is posted as my ISP is not where I live, and when I try to tell other posters that they don't believe me. So why did mine first show my town and then switch to a different town? Also, if you are so good at stopping people who are doing wrong, then why did you NOT stop that person that came online after me and followed me from post to post and spread lies about me leaving me no choice but to state facts I would rather not have in order to correct people from falling for that persons intentional lies? They were falling for them which was dangerous for them. I know what I told that person IN PERSON, so I know for a fact they intentionally came online and put posts out twisting around what I said and said staight out lies about me. You really left me in a bad position, and I was not able to just click "report abuse" as that person would have been alerted. That person even went so far as to accuse some other poster of being me and even went so far as to tell that poster they should give their name-in other words-which is so off the wall as many people do not post their real name. What that person posted that the person who was accused of being me responded to was inappropriate on his part to even bring up, and you should have noticed that too. There is no way I would respond to his posts as I know his intentions are dirty. After it was evident he was following me online AND I STATED SO, he started going to other posts to post, and I had to read what he was saying to find out what is up in his mind for my own safety as I have a Psychology Degree+++. That person has a history of online trouble I was told. That person has also verbally attacked another poster that had origionally fell for his lies after I warned them about him. I know the truth about this situation. You should have picked up on it, and since you didn't, then I have no choice but to wonder if you are really doing the job you should be. Now I am no longer able to even write letters to the editor on important issues where I could have helped out in my town where it would have required my real name as I have done many times prior to that person doing his dirty work AND GETTING AWAY WITH IT! It does APPEAR that you failed THIS TIME. That person has gone so far as to do even more offline that he should not be doing. He gave up part of it in one of his posts. Please do not allow bad people to do this to good people. Like you stated here and claim, "On the admin side, we know who is who regardless." I already knew that from the start! Looks like you blundered. The only reason I was able to post here is because I found the link to this post on a posting I never posted on. Thank goodness someone put the link there or I would not have known how to bring it to your attention without being noticed by that person! I do not know what to tell you as to how to handle the situation with him. If you block him now he may get worse. You need to keep an eye on what he is up to. Maybe after he doesn't find me long enough then you can block him as I am sure he will keep up his deviancy.

Thank you David, as if I recall correctly, it was you who put the link up that led me here. I was reading some posts you and other posters were commenting on, but I never commented there. The person I am referring to in my posting prior to this one was NOT on the posts where you were posting. Keep up the good work!
