I am henceforth initiating a self emposed personal boycott of the Topix forum until you decide to require registration of users.

I have too many idiots using my registered name to post homosexual inuendos, racial slurs, and other unacceptable remarks which causes some readers to become confused and think it's me violating the TOS.

I am no homophobe, nor racist and I will no longer be part of this forum if these antics are allowed to continue.

I enjoy the boards but enough is enough.

By a wide margin, the Topix regulars have requested that Topix users be required to choose a registerable name to post comments. We have witnessed all sorts of unwarranted an unneeded trinkets, but our request is yet to be addressed.

I would like to thank the mods ... especially TopMod7 for doing all possible from their position as moderators, but it's apparent that the task is overwhelming.

A large majority of the unwanted actions by idiot users would be brought under control by required registeration. When you see this, and inact it, send me an E-Mail, you have my address.

Hmmmm, good luck with that.

Topix can't afford to lose the click value that comes from as many users as possible, whether they're registered or unregistered. You don't truly believe that Chris Tolles or any employees of Topix actually care about your personal issues with other users, do you?

They charge people $20 for a priority feedback. It's about the money, man not your feelings.

PERSONS OF PRINCIPLES HAVE HAD IT!!!!
PROOF IS MORE THAN 1/2 OF the AG's across the US (and more coming forward) are going to take Topix to task...bad press is bad for advertisers many of which have pulled out..more to follow! That is more $$ than the piddly 20 bucks no one is going to pay..because all that will remain are the TROLLS!!

RBJ, I admire your determination but the Top Mods wouldn't even notice if any of us boycotted the Topix forum.
The Topix forum is for users that give a crap about this website to the point of preserving it and there is not many of us. LOL.

We gotta figure out something else... Come back on the Troll Buster Thread.

Oh puhleeeze, you take this stuff waaaay too seriously in my opinion.

Topix is a business first and foremost. Businesses fundamental goal is to make money, and they will do it any way they can within the legal parameters. Posters on Topix are nothing but tools for Topix to make money. This is not Kumbaya moment or your support group for emotional issues. It's essentially entertainment for the users.

No, I am not "part of the problem," and I will support whatever I please and have an opinion without needing approval from you or anyone else. You're on a PUBLIC FORUM where you will encounter ALL kinds of people from a myriad of backgrounds, experiences, opinions, beliefs. If you can't take the heat, then perhaps you're in the wrong kitchen, but mostly I hear people like you whining, and that's about ALL you do. Maybe you just enjoy feeling victimized and you want to blame Topix for it. It's a choice.

You have an issue with Topix and its "principles" or lack thereof, then perhaps you should take it up with Topix. Send a Feedback. LOL!

Topix isn't going to change because you're not happy about some offensive comments or trolls. You think you or Topix is going to eliminate people you call "trolls" just because a few people got their feelings hurt?

Those are the people that can't take the pressure of what Topix dishes out. I've been trolled, or attempted to be trolled on from many people. I have a lot of emails from anonymous people that threaten me, try to hack me, try to ask for my bank information and all that, but here I am still here.

Hey RBJ,

Allowing unregistered users does have its price, but it also allows people in small towns to have a voice when they otherwise wouldn't.

Do they sometimes use that voice to be jerks? Yep.

But...they also use that voice to speak out about corrupt local government, political issues, school matters, all kinds of things that they would otherwise never be able to address without fear.

That's the baby. It's our task to try and figure out how to not let it drown in the bathwater.

We are really working on it. Really.

You know that you can send us feedback and we do look at all of it. I'm with you. I'd like to see some manners, but I'd also like to see us preserve the freedom that anonymity allows.

Thanks for addrssing my post.

To be crystal clear on my overall complaint, I can handle almost anything thrown at me on these boards, as you very well know. I am smart enough and witty enough to take care of myself.

BUT!

When I registered the name "Razorback Jack" I should have recieved solitare priviledges to the name on this forum. To allow someone to use an unregistered copy of the name to post such things as, "I give the best BJs in town, ask anyone" is not doing a very good job of maintaining the appreciation of those of use who use registered names to post (in my case) thousands of clean informative and/or humorous posts.

I understand the business aspect of this forum, but you all seem to be overlooking the fact that we, the registerd users are more likely to play by the rules. To insinuate that the unregisterd users are as important to the life of a given board does little to correct the issue. I assure you that the unregistered users who abuse the forum and it's other users are just as addicted to the forum as anyone else.

Again, I ask you to put this issue on the front burner. This is the only post I have made on Topix since the OP. I intend to stand by my principles on this matter and not participate on my regular boards as long as this issue remains a problem.

I refuse to report every user that breaks the rules. I don't have to. I can sit back and watch the boards that I participated in go South.

Once a name is registered, it should be blocked from use by any poster other that he/she who has acquired posting rights to it, that's why I have a password, is it not?

Again I thank you, I know your task is overwhelming. I hope you forward this discussion straight to the desk of Chris Tolles. I also hope that other registerd users follow my lead. I mean, why register?

You can find this happening on any board.

Hmmm.

The issue of hijacking a screen name is complicated with the anonymous commentary -- I think it's a valid point, though.

We'll look into it. No promises on outcome, though.

Wow, he finally appears. Its about time you answer these urgent questions and concerns, instead of merely calling our your "bouncers"!

Yes!! Topix trolls engage in name-stealing. In my case, it is my full real name and this is identity theft. If Topix has any decency or integrity as a company, they will immediately put their investigative department on this and will end this practice, today.

Name-stealing by Topix trolls, is a purely destructive device, it effectively shuts down real-person commentators, it destroys communication, it assaults commentators, it is Topix troll deviance extraordinaire!

Hi Chris. You have your work cut out for you for sure.

Unregistered users hijack screen names all the time. A person can also slightly alter a screen name and create a registered account. Topix does prevent the registering of an already existing account though, so the logical conclusion? Make registration mandatory.

I know that won't happen. You won't please all the people all the time, but you already know that.

People forget they're posting on a PUBLIC WEBSITE.

Good luck. I don't envy you your job.

Wow. So Topix has an admin, if so, they why hasn't it been responding to my questions on Chris Tolles' own threads? Instead, Tolles has only called in the bully-trolls, the bouncers. These threads have been twittered to the world, and the world now knows exactly how Topix handles questions thrown its way.

I am surprised to discover that any admin exists at all on Topix, though I am relived, that is IF, if they are truly concerned about what is going on on these Topix threads.

Sure anonymity gives some measure of freedom to commentators. It has also allowed, however, for gross violations of human rights to occur, not only that, it has allowed for extraordinary levels of troll deviance. A single troll, for example, can wreck havoc under many different pseudonyms. Topix is facilitating trolling, Topix admin, as you well know. For instance, Topix trolls are allowed to name the city or country they are posting from. Topix trolls are also given pre-alerts to moderated commentators, given time to prepare a response. A commentator is too persistent, despite these trolling aids, Topix simply shadow-bans them. This is censorship! Lets let the Truth see some light here!

Moderation is what is needed on Topix, kick the bully-trolls off Topix, allow for REAL civic discourse to occur.

we all know when we see a registered users name be used without signing on that it's an imposter.

You made me your fan, I don't like seeing this bother you.
Maybe you're taking the topix experience too seriously.

Virginia,

Haven't I see you comment that you have been "shadow banned". Now, how could that be that you would then be surprised we have moderators on the site?:)

Topix believes in free discussion. That said, we have a robust set of filters in place and a feedback system that allows anyone to alert our team to content that may need to be reviewed for violations of our Terms of Service. No automated system is perfect, of course.

I will say this though:

Unregistered people do *not* enter their own city on their posts. In fact, their city is displayed automatically and shows the location of their isp, as near as we can determine. They have NO OPTION to change that.

Registered users, however can enter the city of their choosing in their profile, but they can't change the name they post with, so they can hardly be that stealthy if you are worried that gives them better trolling power.

Absolutely NO ONE is given "pre alerts" to comments so that they may troll them before they appear. Our site couldn't do that even if we wanted it to.

If you have specific questions with regard to your own accounts, I would encourage you to click the feedback button and fire off some questions to our community team. I looked up your accounts that I could find and NONE of them showed that they had been banned. So...

Looking forward to your feedback. Please click!
