'Shelf Life' of foods?

I'm sure this isn't the first time I ate something probaly really outdated. Earlier, I ate some snack stuff that could be aywhere up to 2 years old. Snickers candy bar, peanut M&Ms, and a Peanut Butter Nutty Bar. I think stuff like that is supposed to have a long shelf life. Some stuff still comes without the 'best by' or 'expiration' date printed. They all have peanuts/peanut butter in them. I normally wouldn't eat that much candy but I felt like my blood sugar was low and I could use the boost. Now I found some old Doritos chips and potato chips expired in Sept. and Oct. 2012. I have a few uncles that were in the military. They probaly aren't afraid to eat anything.
What do you think?
And please feel free to share your opinions and experiences about old or outdated foods.

I once found a large can of plums on a bus bench. I took it home and ate it. It was delicious. After I ate it, I wondered why the person had left it, so I looked at the date on the can. It was over 20 years old.
Nothing bad happened to me.
