You realize what a problem it is when
you accept the fact that an entire group
of HS students are being passed and yet
can't read.

OMG, sweetie. That sounds like Vacaville! A lot of that happened here in the classes during the 80s.

I blame that on the parents.
How do you Not know that your child
is illiterate? Makes no sense.

Reading is Very important in our
house. My collections of books puts
the public library to shame. lol

My kids read in kindergarten. By
the end of 1st grade my daughter had
read all of Jack Londons books...and
loved them all.

Exactly! How can a parent not know? What are they doing?

I actually met five or so people from this local burg in California who admitted they could not read. I was shocked.

Greetings Perse and Sublime!

Yay for A's freshman!(Arctic, I'm going to start abbreviating your sign-in. I have a strong desire to spell it differently and at least twice I've caught myself. Unless the abbreviation offends?)

Sublime, too many couch potatoes. I'm one of them - I like sitting. I excel at sitting. I'm the best sitter I know. When I cajole myself to exercise, I get happy (endorphins), but if given a choice, I would vote for sitting. Like on sidelines. Our obsession with watching those that can/do as opposed to our getting up and about is reaching epic and large proportions. jmo

9900! Four of a kind? I'll bet it all.:-)

Abbreviate it however it won't offend me.
On the Y7 board they just called me Arc. lol

Or my real name is Sharon. I'll answer to
that to.
I love to sit and would challenge you to a
sitting match ....except that my husband is not
only a doer he drags me out and wants me to
"do it with him." lol

I don't like to work and I like to relax, but I LOVE to play sports ... Baseball, football, volleyball, racquetball, heck ill even spar with someone. I didn't reach my full athletic potential until probably my junior or senior year (i hadn't filled out until that age or developed the coordination) of Highschool, tho. By then, when it comes to football, people are pretty much established by the coaches ... they have their favorites .. and its hard to get a fair chance to start.

So, I didn't play my junior or senior year ... I wasn't going to bust my as$ off in practice and not get a fair chance. Our defensive coordinator was one of my wrestling coaches and after not playing my junior year he told me I should go out for the team my senior year and I told him the something I said here ... I'm not doing it if I'm not going to get a fair chance to start ... He said he calls the shots and likes to play wrestlers. I told him I'd think about it ... In the off season there was some sort of a scandal and the whole coaching staff got let go. So I was like f' that ... I'll just spend the fall partying and chasing girls, lol.

When I went to college, though, I was always one of the team captains when we'd play tackle football in my fraternity or against other fraternities. I was pretty good as a RB and DB.

The thing is, I ended up getting an underage drinking ticket that fall and the athletic director caught wind of it and said I'd have to miss more than half of the wrestling season because of it.

My wrestling coach was a former marine corps drill sergeant ... We practiced in a room that was about 100 degrees ... Ran our as$es off ... Practices were brutal ... I said f' that ... I'm not going to do all that practicing and then pretty much only get to compete for the state tourney.

I never understood the logic of that, because sports kept me clean (cleaner). I couldn't make weight in wrestling and be out partying all the time and we sometimes had meets on Saturday too.

<quoted text>You're right.

Our football team was undefeated in HS.
It was big bragging rights in the Valley.
We'd go to the away games at the 2 schools
we were rivals with. Participating in the
riot that followed. lol

My big problem with the school and the
athletic dept is the obvious favoritism that
goes on. And the kids pick up on this and
follow that lead.

It's not just the athletic dept/program either.
I noticed this year that the cheerleaders are
all the daughters of the "high ranking" PTA
moms. Had never noticed it b/f until a local
girl tried out (and was spectacular) but was
passed over for a less talented girl.
She had to get a lawyer to get the spot on the
team she deserved.
When you have adults that act this way it is the
example that the kids follow.
Yes, my folks never wanted to get caught up in all that or associate with those people. I don't blame them.

Bambi was on poms (before we started dating I used to admire her from afar for quite some time ... I always liked to keep my cards close to my vest until I pounced ... I liked to make sure it was reciprocal first, tho ... Not one to waste effort or time in the absence of that) and her folks weren't really into any of that stuff, tho.

LOL

I don't care to hang w/snobs either.
I did the pom pom thing in HS but my
daughter is more of the creative, musical,
dyed (some) crazy color hair. LOL
She's trying to talk me into letting her
get a facial piercing. I'm just not
too keen on the idea.

My , now 18 yr old (who thinks she is a mature adult ), has been trying to convince me she needs her belly button pierced. So far the answer is no. She came home the other day and had her ears pierced in the lobe again and had one ear in the tragus pierced.

Evening Ms Junket , hope your weekend has been a good one.

Facial piercings don't do much for me, either. Bambi has a few, but not on her face!:-D
