Being hands off, got us just under 20k in credit card debt ... which caused some fights between us (I did not like that) and because I was so hands off I didn't know it was that bad, until it was that bad. I view credit card debt as flushing $$ down the toilet because the interest rates are so high. It drives me nuts. I believe in living within ones means and accumulating wealth not being in debt. I'd rather earn interest on money annually than pay 15% in interest on debt.

We paid that just about off and I again reverted to letting her manage things and was very hands off again (I foolishly didn't address the root cause, however)... That in a few years time got us back up to just under 30k in credit card debt ... Some of it i knew about and some she didn't want to tell me about because she new id be mad. I had to get and stay more involved because of this and now we are debt free.

In doing so, I had to lay down some ground rules ... the first being f' credit cards ... We don't even carry them on us. Neither she nor i am allowed to use them, unless we talk about it beforehand and we transfer money over to pay for it right away. That's really key.

We also have a budget on mint dot com and we track all of our spending and savings. It's really cool and linked to our bank account and automatically tracks all of our purchases and classifies them ... Shows how we are doing in terms of budget goals for each category.

I also monitor our spending via our banking app, but so long as we are hitting our savings target, give or take (I'm not a control freak about it ... As long as we aren't going backwards I'm pretty easy going), each month and there aren't credit card charges (and there haven't been since i dropped the hammer after i learned of the last mountain of debt) I'm not watching every penny she spends.

Between the two of us she's more of a watcher than me. Lets just say I could never have a secret mistress unless she were a sugar momma or she wanted to go out to McDonald's, lol. Bambi would be calling me before I left the jewelry store asking me what I just bought, lol.

We save money each month now and are building up our rainy day fund and on the verge of starting to accumulate wealth (which is nice because instead of falling back on credit cards should something come up we can access our financial reserves, which are interest free) but We both had to be an active participant and I had to lay down ground rules to get us there.

To be clear, it wasnt just her *I* was also part of the problem, because she would tell me sometimes we don't have money for things I wanted to spend on and I tend be like whatever i want to do this and would just be like ehhhh, we can charge it. Not knowing the big picture that stuff adds up!

I think it's important, though to have financial transparency and to share money as if it belongs to each of you, in a marriage.

My sister and her husband did not have this type of arrangement. He had his own bank account. They have 4 kids and she was a sahm. Since he was bringing in the money, he felt more entitled to it when it came to money for leisure. In contrast if I have a sublime fund for discretionary spending, Bambi has one too and gets the same amount as I do.

I like him as a person, but he had a gf in France. Was seeing escorts, including when my sister was pregnant, had a few other women in the side too, and sent his mother a bunch of money in a foreign county. He had a skype phone number, so no phone calls showed up on their bill. My sister had no idea any if this was going on.

She gave him about three chances and they did counseling, but each time she gave him another chance, within a month shed find out he was continuing with his behavior.

It's a real mess and they are in a mountain of debt too. She's going through with the divorce finally.

I think it's going to be a pretty day here. I see sunshine and blue skies! The wisteria and magnolias are blooming. Probably be cherry blossoms before long.

Good morning everyone~~
We have daffodil in bloom and it looks like the Dogwood are
getting ready to flower before too long.

Any holiday that promotes seasonal candy is a good time of the
year for me.
I hope they have a good selection of Cadbury Eggs...

Yeah, they had the Easter candy up the day after Valentines. I love the Cadbury eggs. Don't forget our annual deep-fried peep promotion. Peeps on a stick, beer-battered and fried. Yum.

Greetings Ruby!

Cov, no sign of spring yet. I usually wait for the robins to arrive before I get warmed up to the idea.

Why aren't Cadbury Eggs marketed year-round? Halloween, Christmas, Valentine's, July 4th, etc.

I just noticed the latest Politix poll. Should tax dollars subsidize sports stadiums. What the !@#$.
Our education system is crumbling, people are still underemployed or worse off, but by golly, we absolutely must fork over big bucks to watch overpaid sporters compete. Yep! I cannot believe how many naysayers were opposed. Geesh.

I agree that sports are overplayed in the High Schools. Education should be pushed more.

No doubt about that.

I'm not against HS sports but instead
of the players being the "super stars"
of HS maybe the kids on the honor roll
should be.

There are some football stars that are also high school valedictorians, but perhaps not common. A person can only be stretched so thin. How can studying hard and practicing just as hard be doable without one or the other taking a back seat?

Our current system of education is all homogeneous lumping - no child left behind. Stuff and nonsense. Reward those that deserve A's! Parents should get off their duffs and do a little more hovering at homework time. "Johnny, did you do your homework?" "Yeah." Not thinking parents should *do" the work, but check it and offer assistance if needed. Geez, I remember hs geometry. If it wasn't for my Dad's patient help...
