EMPTYING THE SUITCASE

A dark gloomy day, not much to do
clean the attic, thought this would be cool
an old dusty suitcase, handle dry and cracked
locked without a key, as memories filtered back
as I pried it open, tears ran down my face
photo’s of my buddies, lay atop the case
Rich, Tony, Randy, Cal and Loyde, fell upon the floor
these my best friends, lost to a senseless war
underneath the photo’s, letters never sent
written to their families some torn and bent
there must have been a reason on that dreadful day
so many words written, so much to say
not remembering the reason until this moment in time
unable to do so because of an exploding mine
lost memory, coma, lasted many years
today this old suitcase returned friends so dear
grateful for that old suitcase, the photo’s I did see
because all of my buddies, meant the world to me
I placed a stamp upon each letter
as I mailed them, feeling much better
It’s been a year now out of the case
and not one returned letter came back to my place

Of all the things a popular song can bring
A permanent picture of hope is what I hate the most
But now I'm happy when I'm told to discover
There is no other
Just this is beautiful
This is beautiful
It's oh so fanciful
Empty head feels good
Empty head feels good, yeah
Just don't be too surprised if this permanent paradise
Explodes some day in a permanent picture of pain
Empty head feels good
Empty head feels good
Empty head feels good, yeah
But a permanent picture of love...(no there's a thing)
You feel you sing for something real
I can tell you it's no deal so don't bother

It's never enough to tell me
This is beautiful

You know RedButt, I think we should start a new thread honouring the "never do wrong" American soldiers. They saved us a thousand times over with all of those WMD's they found in Irak and Afghanistan.

Why shoot(!) if it weren't for them the whole world would be speaking German, Russian, Mexican, Cuban, Iranian, Arabic, & Pushtu - and your own fine countrymen would be speaking proper English! But this thead is now infiltrated by too many trolls so I think it's time to start a-fresh with a new one, all glitter and gold!

Heck, we can include Pro-American Yankee Doodle quotes from such magnificent Americans like Joan Wayne, Audry Murphy, Charleen Heston, Boob Hope, Fairy Sadler, PFC Eddie Slovik, PFC Joe Dresnok, Sgt. Ron Kovic, Airman David Hemler, PFC Bobby Garwood, Grant Collins, Jon Michael Turner, CIA Ray McGovern, Ethan McCord, Mike Prysner, Dale Anderson, Army specialist Darrell Anderson, Mike Patterson, Sgt. Matthis Chiroux, USMC Matt Howard, USN Joshua Shepherd. That'd be really swell!

Theres no point. You and others will simply take that over too. I respect your opinion and in fairness, you do appear to know what youre talking about. But why flood a thread dedicated to celebrating soldiers who put their lives on the line every single minute (If "Reporter" DENG's accounts are anything to go by) with these posts?
Oh right... heh heh i forgot about free speech, my mistake! I do have an idea though....

"Flooding" you say? Hmmmmm. I just have to ask ....... Do you see my occasional post(in direct response to "cut and paste" REPEATS) as "flooding"? And how do you see the REPEAT post to which I respond?

But your main theme is, "a thread dedicated to celebrating soldiers who put their lives on the line every single minute" and why I'd want to submit less than positive input to such "a worthy cause".

I don't mind a word or two on the "suffering" of the soldier as long as it's for ALL SOLDIERS and ALL MEN who find themselves in a combat situation. But here's the rub:

1). I dislike the glorification of soldiers. I'm a war veteran myself and I know the torment first-hand. There is no glory. There never has been. Asigning glory and herosim to war means that more men will enlist, and those who don't will be slandered as cowards.

2). To call American soldiers "heros" and then wish the worst kind of death for "the other guys" disgusts me. And ........ that sort of attitude takes the element of "celebrated dedication" out of the equation. In other words, this thread is NOT about that at all. It is a thinly disguised "slander them" "hurrah for us" heap of nationalistic tripe.

So, to make it clear - where do you think I should meet "head on" and speak out against nationalism and its support of treachery? Surely not on the "Who's the Most Popular Rock Star" thread?

I dont like glorifying war either.. it may be necessary it is not pretty.Im sure the US went to Iraq hoping for 12 million barrels per day to ease their now nearly 14trillion dollar debt (Good luck raising the ceiling this time, lads) and are devastated that they can hardly squeeze a quarter of it out. On to Afganistan and i fully understand that the US armed forces are fighting a cause just like the Taliban are fighting a cause. There is no wrong or right in war, only the Winner. I dont know, but id still rather see the Taliban lose. Im not poetic by any means but one poem i do hold dera is one titled. "Dulche et decorum est" One i think youll like, if you havent read it already. Written by a soldier, then published in 1920 it culminates, if i remember in " Dont believe the old lie, Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori " Latin for "It is an honour (Sweet and right, literal translation) to die for ones country". I doubt there is anything sweet, right or remotely honorable about death. It is just a fact of life.
Anyway mabye flooding wasnt the right word, Im not exactly... articulate. But i think you need to debate with someone open to that. Thats not going to happen here, start up a thread, you might be surprised. Deng... is just making stuff up, im sorry but he just is... i know we are being kept from the full truth in the middle east, i look at english speaking russian news stations for a more unbiassed report of whats going on around "locations of interest" and the difference is suprising. Drone attacks and "collateral damage" is far more prevalent than FOX or Sky or even euronews would have us believe. but if America was taking the kicking DENG suggests, i think theyd have withdrawn much sooner. Somalia springs to mind.. Im young still, only 23. So i havent been around like you or others have anf i make many enemies when i politely suggest that something like socialism might not be the absolute worst thing in the world. But i still maintain that perhaps a thread dedicated to appreciating soldiers, even the "Jarheads" for doing what they do should be left just as that.

What a crock. You absolutely hate America and everything it stands for. You have stated many times that you wish for all Americans death, pain and suffering at the hands of her enemies. You reserve your vilest vitriol for American men and women in the armed services. You can't stand the fact that they are better than you and that the only reason you are able to hide behind your keyboard and snipe at freedom loving people is precisely because those same men and women put their lives on the line for you. Freedom of speech is only available to cretins like you because brave men and women saw the need to protect it. You are a waste of breathable air, who delights in the near murder of a child, who crows at the death of innocent men, women and children at the hands of the despicable martyrs. The only reason you stay here is because I spit on you and you try every day in your own inept way to show your hatred of me, by besmirching a thread dedicated to the men and women who have or are serving with honor in the armed services of the free world.
What a pathetic creature you are. So consumed with hatred that it has twisted your soul and blackened your heart.

Indeed. But let's not forget whose turf it is. The Taliban are fighting for their own spin on religious morals, plus fighting against NATO (well, the Americans really) who have no right to be there in the first place. The Afghan-based Mujahedeen (and Al Qaida) are fighting against the Americans, plain and simple. They occasionally coordinate their efforts but for the most part have their own agenda. Since it is an all-out war between Afghanis and Americans (not a civil war as the west would like to call it) then the UN troops (of which my own country is participating) have no "right" in Afghanistan either.
Renegade_22 wrote:

No. There are no surprizes. It's been done before. All problems must be dealt with "head on". There two sides to every story, as they say, and if those two sides are not aired in the prescence of one another then the two of them will merely go on in unilateral ignorance, neither having the opportunity of a full-rounded understanding of the subject itself.

In all of these months, my posts (and your replies to them) have indicated the opposite is true. Take your finger out of the air and stick into your ear to see what dwells there - if anything other than hopeless, unsubstantiated rhetoric.

So, my country is in the top 5 of world democracies because your county lied about WMD’s in Irak, invaded, raped, tortured, murdered, and destroyed it? Gosh. You guys are really great!

First of all, you Americans have very little “freedom of speech” so I wouldn’t boast if I were you. Secondly, Sweden enjoys superior “freedom of speech” because we’ve nurtured it for a long, long time now, against pressure from the United Snakes that would have us do otherwise.

It’ll be interesting to see how that theme developes, don’t you think?

Ps. Why do you grit your teeth when you “chuckle”? It sort of restricts the whole open-mouthed "ho-ho" effect. Know what I mean?

Hmmm... the former seems a tad strong.. mabye the latter? Im not sure to be honest...

America is indeed on their turf. But as right or wrong as it is, i feel that i would rather see the Taliban or other Islam extremists supressed. Its us or them when it boils down to it. They would rather it was us, we would rather it was them. Hunt or be hunted. Yes, they may always sneak one or two through. But i think they could do alot worse if Armed forces of other countries werent hot on their heels. Its selfish, i I
know. But life is. America are going about it wrongly but ANY other country would have been levelled with rockets, vests and trucks before they even apporved a plan to make a start on cutting through the red tape.... America needs to drop the "Were saving the world and bringing democracy" bullsh*t. No one is buying it. Theyre protecting their interests, plain and simple. Theres nothing wrong with that. Any country would do it if they could. But a lot of people are benifiting from their actions. Yes, many have died and been tortured past sanity. But i just cant look around and say our world be just as safe if Nato and Un werent patrolling sea trade routes, guarding oil fields, skies and coastlines and investigating and helping to protect refugee camps and the like in other countries. Yes, there are plenty of domestic threats, muggings, murders, rapes et al. But at least domestic people can just focus on those threats. And for that i am thankful.

GOING HOME

This Soldier
Heading home this day
left a boy now a man
survived in a violent land

This Soldier
Heading home this day
a different view out this window pane
knowing life will never be the same

This Soldier
Heading home this day
Aftershocks settle from the past year
as flag draped coffins fill the rear

This Soldier
Heading home this day
as buddies remain, completing their tour
giving their all inside hells door

This Soldier
Heading home this day
quietly sitting not much to say
entering the clouds, flying away

This Soldier
Heading home this day
Saying prayers for those left behind
keep them safe these days and times

This Soldier
Heading home this day
Happy but sad, feeling safe and free
knowing others will die for me

This Soldier
Heading home this day
Fought in battle, have taken life
somehow leaving does not seem right

This Soldier
Heading home this day
Part of me will always be there
always will have that… thousand yard stare
