Hi there Olive. Are you the legendary poster Virginia Hoge (i.e._Ginny_ and _Virginia_)?
Regarding your request for more info on reverse lookup and DNS servers. The nice poster that explained it to me (I still don't have a firm grasp on it yet) is Spotted Girl. Here are links, for the thread "Does This Apply To All Unregistered Posters?", to a lot of her comments regarding the subject of post location displays. I hope she doesn't mind me doing this.

Hmmmmm. Interesting. LOL!!!

I had the idea that he was somehow living inside a computer and traveling the circuits or signals worldwide. But what you are saying makes a lot of sense.

Can you believe he is about to break 60,000 posts in just a handful of years with his -Kevin- profile? He said he hacked Topix. I bet he somehow skimmed a little bit of posts off of each grey (since their posts are evidently not tallied) and transferred them to his Topix profile safely tucked away in a Swiss account. In fact, I bet he's a double agent, also on Face Book and My Space doing the same thing to them. Hey,-Kevin- if it will help you reach 60,000 quicker, you can have more of mine. I don't mind. LOL!!!

Apparantly he's a globe trotter as well, as is detailed on this thread we are on right now ...

I barely have time to post as myself and seriously have no interest in pretending to be someone I'm not. I think it would get boring very quickly. Plus, the amount of time invested in this pursuit appears to be staggering, but I suppose if you see it as your main source of entertainment all bets are off.

SERIOUSLY THOUGH ...

About that proxy server thing Hegel brings up. Why are those post location displays (Paris, France; Beijing, China; Czech Republib) showing in a faded/dim color? Why not the standard official blue?

I have read that masking IP location is a good thing to ward off hackers and the like. A added layer of computer security. In fact, at least one computer security company, Comodo, that specializes in Anti-Virus, Anti-Spyware, and Firewalls has began treating actual location as a security threat and has put out a feature in their Internet Security product, and it also can be purchased as a product separately, that hides or conceals IP location. I really don't understand all this masking IP stuff and proxy stuff. Never have tried it. Don't know how. But I would like to learn how. For added security. Not for trolling. There appears to be 3 methods. Install a program that does it or use a website that does it or get proxy numbers from a website and enter them into the computer. A concern would be does doing something like that conflict with the user's security product(s) or browser?

I have read in threads that Topix has strict rules against it and will ban users that get caught doing it. But I don't think Topix really cares about people doing it or they wouldn't be showing ads for proxy sites and ads for concealing one's IP address. Right? Apparantly, it's legal by law.

Continuing my post #377 ...

But as a lowly grey I have come to learn from the greens that the best way to add an extra layer of security to protect my IP location is best done by signing up and "GOING GREEN". Then once registered, I can by Topix right according to the greens' comments, make my post location display show what I want it to. And if I ever need help doing it, I'm sure one of you nice "greenies" will be very glad to throw some green slime on me and help me out. Who remembers that cool 1980s TV show "You Can't Do This On Television"? Classic. I loved it. Someone would say "I don't know" and get green slimed. Greens are awesome. I'm not sure I ever met a mean one yet. Well, maybe there was this one in my first months posting on a big city Forum. But it was probaly all a misunderstanding.

Looking forward to hopefully witnessing firsthand the day -Kevin- goes 60,000!!! I just never seen someone with that many posts before. 25,000 is a lot but 59,000???!!! Go -Kevin-!!!

Uh Oh.

Damage control post.

I'm probaly being over-sensitive on this but your silence has me wondering ...

Hey guys,

I hope you don't think I posted something I shouldn't have in saying that thing about being aware of 3 methods to make post location display possibly change. I never meant I know how. I don't. I just meant that I have read about 3 general ideads of doing it. Not the actual processeds or steps involved. So, It's not like I gave out top secret steps to do it or anything. I don't know how. And if I did know how I wouldn't throw the info out there for trolls to grab on to anyway. What I posted is common knowledge these days. People can see it on free/paid softrware websites or can find it readily available in searches or read it on Topix threads in a wealth of postings or look at the ads for it on Topix itself. All I said was I was aware of 3 possible methods: install a program that does it or use a website that does it or get proxy numbers from a website and enter them into the computer. So, that much seems harmless info to me. If it wasn't, trust me, I sure didn't want to aid trolls or stalkers in learning about manipulating post location displays. Like I said. I don't know how and never have. Maybe those 3 things wouldn't work anyway. Also, I did clarify that the best way is to register. I think when I register I'm gonna make my green post location display say "Gilligan's Island".

Hey!

I did a Google search for the city/state, that shows in my post location display, just to see if it has an available proxy server. In other words, to see if it's on a proxy site where someone could use it as a location to post on Topix.

Since I have sure been overly obsessed with the subject of post location displays, especially in my thread "Does This Apply To All Unregistered Posters?", perhaps there is a feeling that I may be using a proxy server for the city/state location in my post display, even though I have stated that I don't know how.

Well, take a look at it. Shows in the official blue. Hover over it. Line forms underneath. Can click on it and go to the real Topix Forum for that city/state.

Plus, I did a Google search a little bit ago to see if that city/state showing in my post location display is available in a proxy server. If it is, I was thinking that some on here may feel I am doing that. Nope, there is not one available that I can find. So, as far as the post location display goes, I'm for real guys and gals. I'm not faking it and don't know how if I could.

And what's so bad about being obsessed with certain harmless subjects anyway? In my case, post location displays? And that concern will eventually pass, I'm sure. Maybe I did take it too far, and made myself look like an idiot or weirdo. But there are worse things on Topix that should be viewed as a threat. Like trolls and stalkers. That, my friends, I certainly am not.

Have a nice day.
Have a nice summer.
Have a nice year.
LOL!!!
:-)

Think I'll go incognito for a while.

IMPORTANT!

I know I said I was taking a break for a while but I had to come back and WARN all of you to be very careful today on the internet. I WAS SEVERELY ATTACKED WITH AN INTRUSION ATTEMPT by wordnetscapess.net . Luckily, the security product blocked it. I had been receiving "high CPU usage" notifications, regarding Internet Explorer, from the security product and Internet Explorer had been blocking stuff from ar.voicefive.com . Well, I did being up in a earlier post in thread that today, Monday July 9, was threatened to be the day that a big virus, that took down 500,000 computers last year, was going to run rampant on users without protection. I don't know if this was related to that or not.

So, beware!

Anyone else experiencing anything?

I was going to stay off the net today, for fear of that big virus scare I mentioned. But I had heard on local Ohio news that a big storm hit in Fredricksburg, VA and I remembered that a grey poster whose post location display is Culpeper, VA left a few critical posts on my thread "Does This Apply To All Unregistered Posters?" and I was worried about that person's safety regarding the big storm. So, I came on that thread to post a request that he or she post an "okay" notice. That was when the security product gave me the pop-up announcement that it blocked a severe high attack on the computer. An intrusion attempt by worldnetscapess.net .

I guess I should run a full scan with the security product. Just to be safe. Maybe delete browsing history to destroy any possible bad cookies.

This isn't the first time with attacks regarding me. And I'm sure many of you have had your issues as well. To mention a few. Last year, the old Dell computer I was using was hit with that virus Malware Protection and eventually blue-screened. A relative's computer was hit with Malware Protection and was recovered but eventually blue-screened. Both computers were used on Topix. Now, I'm not saying anything bad about Topix. But since this whole post location display thing does appear to be both IP Address and ISP Address related, maybe a hacker or hackers on Topix could have done something malicious. I don't know. But I think it would be a good idea for me to contact my ISP and security product provider and request things like a new internet IP address and how to mask my location on the internet to prevent this stupid stuff from happening. Maybe Topix could help me hide my post location display on here as well.

Any real serious advice would be appreciated.

This is not a joke.

I just realized that I posted something that may have been perceived as being critical of Topix. I was not.

Please, allow me to clear up any misunderstanding I may have caused in the following statement I made in Post #377 about masking, concealing or hiding IP location.

I never meant that I looked into it and found that it appears legal by law for Topix to show ads for proxy sites and ads for concealing someone's IP address.

What I meant was that it appears legal by law for someone to use proxy sites and for someone to conceal IP address.

Looking back, I can see how that could've been misunderstood there. My apologies. There. I feel better now.
