Online anonymity no sure thing in libel cases

There are 10 comments on the Asbury Park Press story from Sep 13, 2012, titled Online anonymity no sure thing in libel cases. In it, Asbury Park Press reports that:

They're not as anonymous as they believe. We've seen a number of cases in recent months in which judges have upheld subpoenas that give libel-suit plaintiffs the identities of those who have been posting ugly things about them: * In July, a federal district judge in Idaho ruled that the Spokesman Review in Spokane, Wash., would have to turn over ... Good, on-line bullies should be held accountable.
The anonymous poster who threatens and defames others is a thing of the past.

Good.

You are correct. Where I live, the nearest lawyer who will even consider such a case is an hour from me. The ones who will take a case are in southern California.
So you've got to find a lawyer who wants to cut his teeth on such a case, and they will soon surface, based on the precedent that has been set.
The only thing wrong with the article is anonymous posters are NOT protected by "shield" laws.
We are still in the infancy of Internet technology. I expect that in my lifetime, the use of the Internet will change dramatically, as the cases keep showing up in our judicial system. the abuse is widespread, but it will end. It just takes time.

The case in Spokane was because someone defamed someone else BY NAME. Here it is rare to find anyone that uses their real name, so all the bashing in the world can cause no harm to anyone in the RW.

But if someone believes they have a case, I am sure they will find an attorney willing to take their money from them.
