A couple of tough guys I knew back in grade school did give Ex-lax to a guy I knew. They got in trouble for it via the parents and, to make amends, offered the same kid the "antidote" which was more of the same. I had to laugh and admire their brazenness. But, I also had to stop him from taking it. We were seventh graders who didn't know the dangers of such an act. In large doses, as skinny as this kid was, it could have really effed him up.
Oh the cat was fine. He did sleep for a couple days afterward though and wouldn't eat anything I gave him for quite awhile. It was funny at the time. Being 12yrs old, a lot of things were funny that when looked back on now were not right. I didn't have any brothers, so my sisters were the butt end of some pretty sadistic pranks. I did learn one thing growing up, never glue your fathers work boots to the mud room floor. He laughed and thought it was funny, but I didn't find the punish all that humorous.

<quoted text>You're so right about 7th grade. I remember peeing my pants while laughing at a slumber party. I was laughing because a fat girl belched. I mean I really peed. Thank God the mom at the party helped me through it.
I also learned during those years how great my parents really were. Some of the moms and dads of my friends were just horrors, I thought. One mom cursed her daughter for some tea spilling on a coffee table they were moving to make room for the sleeping bags. I was horrified, I remember. I'd never seen anything like that!
My parents made me go stay at friends houses whenever my sisters had slumber party's. The red food coloring in the shampoo bottle might have had something to do with that though. I thought that the girl freaked out a bit much myself. My dad even laughed, and she didn't make him leave.

I read your argument on a certain political thread. I'm blaming the negative judgements on the poor sports you eviscerated. The whole time, when it was there turn to reply, I kept thinking "stay down boys 4 gawds sake - STAY DOWN" poor guppies. When, they start having your comments removed, your seeing the actions of the truly desperate.
btw: have you tried any of these products? It hasn't been recreational chemicals that have lowered my brain volume...My estimate is I've probably lost at least a decade of my life to "do it yourself" chemical annihilation LOL
I am being good. I'm not even going to go look at what's beind 'discussed' over there. I'm hoping that if I leave them alone they'll leave everyone here alone.

As for the soy products, yes, we do use many of them. I don't know how much you know about septic systems but, for one to operate correctly, there has to be a certain type of bacteria present in order to break down the waste. Many household chemicals will kill those bacteria, causing the system to back up and possibly overflow and stink. The paint stripper isn't as fast as some, but is much, much better for you and the wood you're working with. It also doesn't seem to pull the grain up like others do. That helps when working with older pieces where you want to keep sanding to a minimum.

I cannot post on the forum what my brothers and their buddies did to the neighborhood cats. Or, what I'm told they did.

You said it best when you said,'we had to make our own fun'. The best prank however was, when a friend and I crawled under the stage in our elementary school auditorium, and loosened all the boards a half a turn. That must have been the creakiest 8th grade graduation in history.

Didn't mean to sound like I was scolding you. Just the opposite. I enjoyed watching clear and concise logic leveling those ill prepared goobers. Try as they may to spin it, you kept them on point without resorting to condescension or name calling. Impressive. I also learned a few things myself in the process. Not bad for Topix. Please continue! the nasty judge-its are all they have left.

As for soy, not familiar with septic systems but I get the concept. I did take a work related tour of a waste water plant. The tour guide had a dark sense of humor, which wasn't pleasant as we walked metal planks over bubbling goo. Their intended goal is called "from toilet to tap" ick. So far the cleaned water is called gray and used for municipal facilities (golf courses etc). As for the varnish on my chair, it's very thin to non existent - soy stripper might be the perfect product. I want to keep sanding down to a minimum. I also want to retain some of the marks of wear but tighten what needs tightening and darken the color towards black oak. The chair below is the same model and color as mine.

I recognize that style of chair. They do tend to loosen up with use though. I recall you said something about 'glue' in an earlier post. A little word of warning about glues. Unless you are familiar with woodworking, and have access to the various clamps needed, stay away from a product called 'Gorilla Glue'. While being a very strong product, it has a tendency to push the pieces being glued apart. And once dry, the directions for cleanup include the use of a hammer and chisel. If you don't have clamps, I have a nifty little trick you can use involving a piece of rope and a stick. Not what you would call professional, but does the trick in a pinch.

I forgot to mention this earlier. What ever you do, don't buy and apply the color of stain that you are wanting. I'll explain. The color of stain on the can is 'not', in most cases, the color you will end up with. On an older piece, such as yours, where testing different shades of stain isn't an option, always start with a lighter stain for your first coat. You can always apply a second coat to darken as needed. But you cannot remove a coat to lighten the color. Find the color of stain that you wish to use, then buy one shade lighter than that. Different woods, depending on their age and type, react differently to the same stains. If your piece has already been stained once, then you will be adding to the stain that is in the wood. If you apply a dark stain to wood that has been stained already, you'll end up with a color that is darker than you might have wanted. Think of it as painting your nails. Each successive coat becoming darker when applied.

Maybe, but, Josey wasn't "my" cat. He was part-time and major medical wasn't in his benefits package. As it was, he got awful sick at one point and I thought he might die. A trip to the Vet and $185 later I found out he had a cold. If you ever want to take your life in your own hands, try giving a cat named Josey Wales medicine from one of those dropper things! I dare you! He wasn't having any of it. He recovered from the cold like anybody else would.

As far as his birth control, that was the responsibility of the folks who "owned" him. I'm a democrat. I'm all for birth control but not for forcing it upon other people. I talked to him about girls but, it was like talking to a wall. It didn't take.

Yes, he is, but I want to take a pair of scissors to that awful beard.
I enjoyed the one about the couple who refused to have their first child until they could figure out why their cat kept eating the furniture. If you get a chance to watch that as a rerun, do so. This episode illustrates how young people today consider their pets almost like children. They were simply unwilling to give up their cat to get pregnant. It was mind boggling.

It does appear that way. Too bad said judge it queen isn't very bright. Let's see, not happy that I am posting on this thread and apparently getting along with said queen's arch nemesis... All of this started once I called said queen out on bad behavior... gee, I wonder who it could be..

LOL! Hey, I understand. My daughter's Norwegian Forest cat had some kind of infection around his mouth. This was just before he was neutered and he'd gotten loose and was out tom-catting. Anyway, kids never have any money so guess who gets to bundle the beautiful thing up in the crate and take him to the vet? His vet's name was Mary Catherine and even though he jumped to the tiny space between the top of a cabinet and ceiling of her examination room, she insisted he was just a "long haired, domestic." Well, two days and $900 later, I told my kid to either find a health insurance policy on the cat or keep her fingers crossed.
Seriously, at what point does one draw the line on medical attention for an animal? It's a very tough call.
