There are many discussions already on Topix concerning this subject. Many of them get bogged down in personal attacks, with posters on each side of this question attacking the opposing posters by character attacks, threatening horrible punishments for not believing, or just by being disrespectful towards the other person.

For purposes of this thread the following rules will apply:

1) No post permitted which in any way attacks another poster. Only post that you agree or disagree with what the person you reply to stated giving reasons why you disagree.

2) Any post which does not follow (1) above should be ignored by all other posters, and not responded to at all.

3) Posters who see someone not following (1) may not post to them that they are breaking the rules because that in itself is an attack. Just simply ignore that post. If you feel that someone new here might not have understand the rules stated, contact them by Private Message, to advise this of this, if you wish, but not in the public forum.

4) All posts should be about the topic stated. Comments not related to the topic should also be ignored (this should cut down having to read through a lot of irrelevant posts).

5) Points made for either side should be supported by factual information which others can see; not just what a person believes to be true, except if they can demonstrate why they believe that is the case.

6) Since this topix is about strictly God, which will be understood as the God of Jews, Christians And Muslims, quoting comments attributed to that God, taken from any books which that God is claimed to have either written or inspired, will be considered as not evidence for either side of the topic, because to do so is "begging the question", a logical error, meaning that the proof of the existence of God has already been established by quoting that God, when this topic is intended to discuss whether or not that God actually exists.

7) No personal information about other posters are to be posted, either referring to that poster and what they said on another thread, or giving information about that poster derived from any other source. Our purpose on this thread is to only discuss the stated topic, and nothing else.

8) If you have nothing to contribute to either side of this topic, then this likely is not the thread you should be on.

I will state my own position on this topic on the next post so that it will be separate from this list of rules, and for anyone interested, can be more easily read than attempting to sort it out from all of these rules.

MY POSITION ON THE TOPIC

I classify myself today as an atheist, which I define as a person who does not have a belief in any deity.

I considered myself a Christian for over 40 years of my life, and during most of that time I was very active in the life of the Christian church and the people who were also involved with the Christian church.

I have served on the governing boards of several churches that I have attended, including as Chairman of the Board.

My reasons for no longer having a belief in a god, and as this topic states, the Abrahamic God, are many, but do not include any animosity to any belief or to any experience I might have had during the time I was a believer that might have made me turn against belief.

I do not today believe in God because I feel that the information that I have learned throughout my life about this God is based on stories told by humans entirely directed by their own imaginations or by other human beings.

To the best of my knowledge based on a lot of personal research and thinking about the topic, I am not aware of any evidence that anyone has ever found, and that has been verified by others to be legitimate, that would prove there is a God.

I believe that there are enough solid proofs now available, to anyone who has a basic knowledge of science, that discredits too much of the beliefs associated with the belief in God, to be able to attach any credibility to the sources of any belief in that God.

So that I have not already broken one of the listed rules by stating what I believe but not backing it with evidence, I will give one example, of many.

The common belief of those following God is that God destroyed all living creatures on this Earth, except for 8 members of the family of Noah, and 2 of every living creature on the Earth, which were saved by being on a ship called the Ark, during a period when the whole surface of the Earth was covered by water, thus killing all other living things.

God is said to have done this because the people on the Earth had become so sinful that he felt that they should be destroyed. Since killing all humans would also kill all other living creatures, He ordered that a pair of each species be taken on board the Ark, so they might repopulate the Earth after the Flood subsided.

This story has been proved, to my satisfaction, to be untrue, because people who are trained and educated in the sciences related to the earth, water, life, etc. have discovered through investigation of the earth that there never was a time when all living creatures died off throughout the whole world.

Also it has been calculated by mathematicians and scientists that the amount of water required to completely cover the total surface of the Earth to the top of the highest peak would be 5 times all the water that would be available in any form for that purpose. In other words it would have been impossible to cover the whole earth with water to that depth.

Also it would have been physically impossible under any means to have found 2 of every species of the many millions of species on the earth, created a means to get them from where they lived to the Ark, to also have collected adequate food to keep all of these creatures alive for the period of the Flood, and until food would be available again on Earth after everything had been killed off, and to have returned each of these creatures to the place on Earth from where they had originated before the Flood, so that they are where we find them today, or where we find evidence today that they once were. It would not have been possible to build a vessel of sufficient size that would float, that would contain that number of creatures and enough food to last them.

This example does not disprove God, but I feel it discredits the source that we have available from which we first learned about this God.

So the story of Noah is one of your main reasons for not believing in God.

Many Bible scholars agree that the first 4 books of the Bible were passed on by word of mouth. It doesn't mean the story of Noah never happened but highly likely it didn't happen the exact way the Bible portrays.

I don't know how that discredits any belief in God though.

I find the concept of the spirit of God, a supreme force, a reason and purpose for life to be more easier to believe than the theory this all happened by chance of a cosmic big bang. That doesn't mean I don't believe in science because I do, but just that there is a reason and purpose behind it all.

What church did you belong to?

The perponderance of "circumstantial evidence" as provided by scientific discovery and testing, has refuted most(if not all) the abrahamic stories contained within the book referred to as the bible (old and new testaments).

Most obvious is the account timeline of genesis, the great flood, exodus, sodom & gomorrah, the immaculate conception, and the ressurection of jesus.

What church did you belong to?
I belonged to the United Church of Canada, originally formed in 1925 as an union of Methodist, Presbyterian and Congregational denominations, and later joined by some other denominations. Some individual Methodist and Presbyterian congregations didn't participate in that union, and there are still those denominations functioning in Canada, but have very low total enrollment. My first wife and also one of my university roommates were both raised in that Presbyterian separate church.

The UC of Canada is Canada's largest non Roman Catholic Christian denomination, and is considered by some people to be one of the leading denominations in the world. Though there is a wide variety of different congregations not all sharing the same philosophies, the general concept of the UC is a leading edge church which attempts to stay with the world rather than remaining back several centuries, which some denominations seem to do.

I support what they have done, however no longer agree with their view on God or the Bible, even though my aunt is one of their ministers, and my mother is still a very active worker in the church.

Ummm.....I'm not at all sure that calling out the name of god is at all indicative of there really being a god.....I mean....if one calls out god's name in the throes of sexual passion does that mean a god actually exists?

And if one calls out "Oh god", which god is the person even referring to?

Or when one is frustrated or surprised or any other number of emotions one might feel that leads them to exclaim: Jesus Christ!- does that mean that Jesus must actually exist?

I did a lot of repeating the name of Jesus with a few extra words added when I was in the worst agony I have ever experienced, but even though I was brought up a Christian, it didn't occur to me to pray. I was just trying to out-curse the pain.

Your picture and location say South Africa to me. There I highly suspect you would feel that way. Don't know what African country my wife's ancestors were brought from, but she is a former Caribbean descendant of slaves.

I hope things get better for you there. I have always had sort of negative opinion about S. Africa due to I was raised thinking it was a pretty evil place. My grandfather's half brother fought in the Boer war there; not sure whether that was good or bad for the non-whites.

We whites did a lot of very evil things sin the world as we tried to take the whole world over. Kind of happy I was alive in those days - would be a lot of guilt to carry around.

Does your comment mean there is a God, in your opinion, but He gives Whites a better deal than Blacks?

I was raised in a very strict Roman Catholic setting but i have given up my christianity beliefs. What i mean is that why did God create black people in a majority white world knowing well that every other race will discriminate against blacks? Blacks suffer everyday but whites live 'heavenly' lives on earth i.e better jobs, lifestyle, healthcare, well paying jobs etc but even if u as a black person get an education, u will never be on the same fair level as whites. Where was God when Africans were being killed by the colonialists? Where was he when slaves were being dumped on the atlantic? Don't get me wrong, i love whites. I am not racist but i feel that whites are better taken care of than blacks by God.

Why would one attribute "God" with an act like this?

This is like saying, a man walked out of the nightclub and got jumpred by a gang, left for dead. Who are you going to call?

Illogical at best.

Question - what is with the new avatar "levels"? Anyone know what this is to represent?

I tried to figure it out as in the number of posts the poster has done, but that doesn't work, because there are many posters with thousands fo posts, and they are at level one, just like a new poster with under 100 posts. Then you have someone who has many thousands of posts, and it shows level 7.

Anyone?

Thanks in advance!

It takes faith to believe in the unseen. I know from the bottom of my heart that God spoke everything into existence. I don't need proof. He gives us everything, He makes the sun shine and rain fall on all people good or bad. We are supposed to take on the character of Christ and love God with all our hearts, mind, spirit and strength and love thy neighbor. This is a commandment. Let's not worry about trying to look behind the curtain to see who's operating the equipment but rather do as we were instructed.

.. in America, many southerners are still racist due to an antiquated cultural system that encourages bigotry ..
