Topix wont like me adding this post as it upsets the apple cart that they are used to. I do not think people should be allowed to post unless sticktly registered. Topix as its stands now, is a playground for trolls and bullies. They are destroying a good news forum. The experiement did not work.

Please listen to user feedback.

Right!

That is a problem in my page.

One person comes in so many names and others can tell. They fight over this multiple-username issue that they forget about the topic at hand.

I have been teling topix for 3 months. We have a nasty mad troll on the Slovakia forum posting under about 5 different user names. Trolls post on topix agreeing with themselves and setting up innocent people for abuse and attack. IMO the forums should be better moderated and users should register via a secure way before posting and users should be tied to one PC and one ID.

They will remove posts if it violtaes their "TOS" but this is not the right answer to the current problem.

I share the same observations. We have given them a lot of suggestions, but what do you think were carried out?

The Judge It feature - do you think that's necessary? It makes the postings appear juvenile and yet it's there. It doesn't add anything; worse, it even subtracts.

We have this very problem in Offbeat, in practically any thread.

My question is, can an unregistered poster be banned? Also, if they are using a proxy server, will this make it harder?

I've sent Topix so many feedbacks, they probably know my name already! I've asked them to send me an email with an explanation, but I haven't received one yet.

Can any fellow Editors answer my question? Or a MOD?

ECHO...ECHO....ECHO..........

We've had this problem on our topix news page forever. One person was using at least 15 user names, constantly baiting others into fights.

I'm tired of this type of troll and sockpuppet behavior and it needs to STOP!

It can stop...if people stop responding to it. But I can never get anyone on board. Oh, maybe for a day or two, but it starts up again.

If a troll is ignored, it will go to feed off of someone else. Topix won't help fix the problem.

Hi Folks-

Thank you for your feedback and questions on this issue. The problem of "trolls and bullies" in the forums is one that we are aware of, and we are considering making some changes to the profiles and forums that would alleviate many of these issues. We are still discironing out what these changes will entail, but just wanted to let you know that we are working on it!

While we cannot discuss how the banning process works (so as not to tell people how to circumvent our filters and cause even more problems!, we can say that if you are having issues with a user or a set of users in a forum, please send us direct links as examples and a description of the issue through the Feedback forum.

All feedback is reviewed by one of our Moderators within one to two (usually one!) business day - also, make sure to include that you are a topix editor in your feedback!

This is a great point. Ignoring trolls by *actually* ignoring them (not responding to their posts, and not acknowledging their presence) drives them crazy! If they don't elicit the response they are looking for, they generally move on to a forum where they visibly drive people crazy :)

Thank you so much for replying to my post.

I have reported this user thru the feedback system, numerous times, but I think I only mentioned a few times that I am an Editor. Thanks for that suggestion. And it's nice to know that you're working on the problem.

As of a few days ago the 'troll' is no longer there. Not sure if he/she got banned, or if they got bored; not many people were responding to it.

Thanx again!

I disagree with you on this. I like the kind of frontier attitude Topix has about it, which to me makes it worth putting up with some trolls.

I already know from other forums that forcing people to register will stifle the number of people who post. You may think it elevates discussion, but basically it just ends up making it bland. I'm probably in the minority, but I say leave Topix the way it is.

When I encounter bullies and trolls, it makes me start crying, then i'm depressed for days.
I spoke with my Doctor and he has prescribed an anti-depressant, it seems to be helping alot. I can now handle coming back to Topix.

Short answer. No.

I have found.

However, and this is very important, when you contact Topix through the feedback function, you MUST give the exact link and number of the post to the offending comment on a thread and sometimes, they will remove that comment if it violates the Terms.

Don't know how much manpower they have to deal with all the offending comments, however. And there are so many, almost too much to keep up with.

In the meantime, it's best to ignore (and it takes practice!) because trolls need to be fed but if you don't feed them, they eventually give up.

I wish Topix would put an ignore feature like IMDb has on their forums. They do a much better job at monitoring posts, IMO.

However, the business model at Topix is strictly advertising for the moment, so don't count on it--for now.

Will topix in the near future be able to get a program that detects the registered user, who then goes off as unregistered, only to troll and act as an innocent poster? These people may use different computers in doing this....also using AOL, hiding their ISP, ect., etc. Could the program in order to even post run such that the poster has to use their given number that would match up with their original(first post ever made).......or no post could be made, period! Kind of like a key component for safety for all who post. As a poster who keeps things peaceful, I find that the registered posters seem to be the offenders as well as those who trolls seems to go after. I have decided that for now topix is a good thing but is being abused by many posters. I do appreciate the concept and true intent for the original inception of the forum, that being a helpful and community minded, positive informative place! For the time being, I will reframe from posting. Thanks for your time.
