Why does my location change?

I wonder why my location changes from time to time. I might appear less credible as an editor with these changes. What can be done about this?

what type of connection do you have? Also, unless you have a static ip address, you could be getting a new ip address each time you connect, especially with a wireless or broadband. Dialup will give you a new location if you dial to different connection locations. Many times with wireless access such as those obtained thru Verizon or SBC, your location changes depending on the tower it connects to when you activate your connection.

Our system automatically displays the location of your Internet Service Provider. This is determined by your computerís IP address, and may or may not match up exactly with your physical location. This cannot be changed, but if you are registered, you can customize the Hometown field to whatever you would like.

As already said, anyone can post on topix logged on or not and so location and names will change.

Enough said on this issue its like shouting in the wind, no one hears you. I give up.

Hazzard, I never log out from Topix.

I had posted a comment. Seconds later, I posted another one to correct my previous one. Result: I had two locations showing.

My location pretty much never changes, and there are some downfalls to that also. When I post an opinion that may not be particularly popular I suddenly get blamed for EVERY post with the same IP location.

Interesting you should mention that. I have just recently been accused of being posing as an entirely different poster who's ISP sometimes shows up as mine. It's been he11. People are convinced that because our ISPs are the same we are the same person and I'm being deceitful. I have never changed my name or posed as anyone else. I wish the ISP and Hometown and comments number didn't show at all. I think Topix is sharing too much personal information of ours.

If a heated debate erupts I actually cringe if someone with the same ISP agrees with me because then everyone claims we are the same person and I'm using a different name to agree with myself.

My husband doesn't have a profile and he was once on a thread where another poster with the same ISP turned up and started calling everyone filthy names, so my husband quit the thread because he knew he'd get the blame.

Yup, that's exactly what happened. I've been the punching bag for a bunch of people on one particular forum. So, when this chick came on board that they also didn't like and she and I had the same ISP, they accused me of being her and switching back and forth. It was very frustrating and irritating. These kinds of people always find someone to rag on--it's their entertainment as far as I can tell.
