More sequester pain: White House cancels tours

The White House announced Tuesday that it was canceling all public tours of the president’s home because of the sequester spending cuts.
“Due to staffing reductions resulting from sequestration, we regret to inform you that White House Tours will be canceled effective Saturday, March 9, 2013 until further notice. Unfortunately, we will not be able to reschedule affected tours,” the White House said in an email.

The only "low information voter" were the ones who drank the Dick Morris/Karl Rove Kool-Aid at the Fountain of Romney.

IN OTHER REAL NEWS:

The Dow hit a new record high today, topping 14,264. The previous record was 14,198.10, set in October 2007, when investors were squarely focused on the Federal Reserve. The Fed had cut rates for the first time in four years and was worried the housing implosion would hit consumers and the broader economy.

Today, the Fed’s actions have juiced stocks and helped boost the economy, but the recovery after the 2008 financial crisis remains slow-going.

Investors appear to have shrugged off the fight over $85 billion in forced government spending cuts.

Stay tuned for another riveting installment of Au le Contraire Jimbo's spam-a-thon on most of these local Topix boads.

Liberals blow with the wind, and change their POV as often. That's why I consider myself an anti-war Leftist. I'm opposed no matter who's conducting it.

Will Charles and David are in mourning?

You didn’t hear this on Fox News or the Drudge Report, but on October 10 Venezuela seized and nationalized a massive fertilizer plant part-owned by Koch Industries. The media silence is a bit puzzling. You’d think that the seizure of property belonging to America’s second-largest private company, owned by one of the most powerful families in the country and the bankrollers of today’s libertarian/Tea Party revolution—the billionaire brothers Charles and David Koch–would be considered newsworthy. But no, even though their Venezuela plant was nationalized a whole three months ago, other than a handful of short business-wire dispatches, this has yet to make the news. Even Koch Industries has been suspiciously silent on the matter.

One reason why the Kochs could be keeping the news under wraps is that the nationalization of the fertilizer plant may appear to be bad news for Charles and David Koch, but here’s the big surprise: the Kochs made hundreds of millions on every end of this deal…and even more surprising, bond markets cheered the nationalization. In other words, the free markets championed by the Kochs gave a big thumbs-down to Kochs’ negative influence on the value of the business, while at the same time, the free-market Kochs earned huge windfalls doing business with socialists. No wonder this story hasn’t made the rounds.

Here’s what happened: When Chavez’s nationalization of the plant took Koch Industries out of the picture, bond investors responded by driving up the value of the company’s bond debt by a whopping 33 percent. That means they had a lot more confidence that the debts would be paid back AFTER the free-market Kochs were out of the picture. As every business school flunky knows, price fluctuations of bonds are very much like those of stocks: the more they cost, the higher the confidence in a given company. And that means investors had less faith in the ability of the Kochs to run a tight business operation than they did in a bunch of Venezuelan socialist bureaucrats.

For a free-market family like the Kochs, such a big pro-nationalization thumbs up from the Invisible Hand isn’t just bad PR, it’s downright embarrassing.

In full disclosure, the Koch's agreed to not close and move provided there was a direct and verifiable benefit towards youth and senior citizen programs. VZA Act 89.1Bg is the national reference.

CA will buy a 35 percent stake in a Venezuelan propylene plant from Koch Industries Inc., Armando Sandoval, general manager of the Maracaibo-based company, said today.

The transaction, valued at about $35 million, will be completed by April 30, said Sandoval in a phone interview.

Grupo Zuliano, a Maracaibo-based holding company whose subsidiaries produce chemicals and plastics, previously had a 15 percent stake in Propileno de Falcon CA, known as Profalca, and will now hold 50 percent. A unit of Venezuelan state-run chemicals company Pequiven SA holds the remaining amount. The acquisition was approved in a shareholders meeting yesterday, Sandoval said.

“Koch wanted to exit the joint venture,” said Sandoval.“We want to consolidate our business with Pequiven and for that reason are increasing our stake.”

Koch’s divestment of the propylene plant stake comes after its 35 percent stake in the FertiNitro Venezuelan fertilizer joint venture was nationalized by President Hugo Chavez in 2010.

Evidently the Koch's closed.

"benefit towards youth and senior citizen programs"?

So the Koch's are fighting FOR them in Venezuela but trying to destroy them in the U.S.?

My point is that the story line can be slanted however the writer wants you to see it. Koch's are in business to make money. Not just for themselves, but the millions of investors. You want to attack and denigrate American success stories because they do not support you socialistic ideals? Typical liberal socialist mentality -- where's my cut?

If you live in America, then you have directly benefited from the Koch Industries.

Congressman Offers Amendment Defunding Obama’s Golf
by Keith Koffler on March 6, 2013, 8:01 am

Rep. Louis Gohmert (R-Texas) introduced an amendment to the fast-moving continuing resolution spending bill that would bar funding for President Obama’s golf outings until the White House reopens for public tours.

Gohmert, who announced his amendment from the floor of the House, said Americans, whether Republicans or Democrats, will be greatly disappointed to come to Washington and not be able to get their tours of the White House. Many tours are planned well in advance.

With the White House closing its doors to public tour groups in order to save money for the sequester, it's worth remembering some of the other costs the White House incurs annually.

Like the "Chief Calligrapher," Patricia A. Blair, who has an annual salary of $96,725, and her two deputies, Debra S. Brown, who gets paid $85,953 per year, and Richard T. Muffler, who gets paid $94,372 every year.

In all, the White House appears to employ 3 calligraphers for a yearly total of $277,050.

Despite sequestration, there's been no announcement of the White House scaling back on calligraphers.
