When Doctors Shouldn't Ask About Sex

Whenever the topic of doctors and sex comes up, I usually argue that more doctors need to talk to their patients about sex.

I think this is a great idea, but I'm kind of disappointed that the focus is on females. More females already get screened for chlamydia and gonorrhea beacause they get their paps regularly in order to get birth control, etc. It's men who should really be screened when they visit their GP, for whatever reason.

Well, u should be smart enough to ask. Even if you don't have symptoms. I got checked a few times for STD's and hiv even tho I had no symptoms of either.

Luckily, the results for the STD's and the hiv both came back negative on every occasion, but I found out i do have an enlarged prostate which may lead to prostate cancer.

They say almost all men get there at some point.

PEACE !:)

Daniel P. are you over 40 and having urinary problems? Enlarged prostate will slow urine flow.

Actually, an enlarged prostate doesn't (necessarily) lead to prostate cancer.[I know you said "may"]. However, prostate cancer usually causes the prostate to enlarge.

Well, i am over 40, and the past 2 years I have had to p*ss a couple times a night, which was never the case before. i decided to not do anything about it.

Then a few months ago, I started reading in many different sources in the press about the latest medical advice about prostate cancer because a recent medical report on a long-term study was released. So i was reading these articles on the web on the ap, cnn, time, wins, etc......

And the best medical advice now is called "watchful waiting". in other words, don't do anything. It also said that almost ALL men get prostate cancer some time in their lives. so after reading this, i did go to the doctor to specifically have a DRE (look it up) and a PSA test.

The doctor said the DRE showed very definite enlargement, and the PSA test came back negative. so i just have to live will sleepless nites and see if it develops into prostate cancer.

Also, the PSA test is simple blood test, and i was talking to the guy there who draws the blood, and he recognized me and was surprised to see me. We hadn't seen each other in over 2 years and he asked why. i told him it was because i was lucky and hadn't been sick in 2 years !:) so i told him i was there for a PSA test, and he told me that he had prostate cancer. So i asked him about his experience and his opinion. I thought this was a good idea because, since he is not a physician, he can look at it from my point of view, but since he also is a medical professional, he would have a more educated opinion since he is familiar with medical procedures. so we discussed it.

He said he had prostate cancer and had surgery and he told me DEFINITELY do NOT have surgery if you can possibly avoid it. he said the "watchful waiting" is definitely the way to go from his personal experience with prostate cancer.

Incidentally, being gay, you really don't need the thing anyway. where the problems come in with surgery, is they also remove nerves and other tissue BESIDE the prostate and thats where the unpleasantness comes in later when you have problems with urination and/or cant get a hardon anymore. Its' because of the nerves and other tissue they remove, not the removal of the prostate that causes that.

theres a LOT of resources on the web on the most recent studies on this if anyone else is having prostate problems, or if your not having those problems, if your interested in what probably lies ahead.

Dr. Dan signing off !

PEACE !:)

Dr. Dan. did you do a urine flow test and a ultrasound on bladder urine retention? I was getting up several times a night and found I was retaining about a liter of urine after feeling empty. I had the TURP and now I don't retain much more than i should normally. Check it out if you haven;t already.

No, I didn't do any of that. I decided I might cut back on the amount of Budweisers I have in bed at nite before I go to sleep.

Dr. DAn. I have found that to get things done, you have to advocate for yourself. Some GP's don't get too concerned. I went through this misery for 5 years and 3 different GP's. I finally said "enough" and advocated for myself and saw a urologist. Best move I made.

Was the operation painful? When they ran the water through your bladder, was it uncomfortable.

"Dr Dan" was a joke. stop calling me that, please.

as i said, i had the DRE and the PSA and the situation is an inconvenience, but not at the point yet where anything else should be done.

furthermore, as i said, the guy who takes the blood had the surgery for prostate cancer and he said DONT do it if you can possibly avoid it at all.

which is also what the lastest study published in the medical journal said that got all the press.
i'm typing this in bed rite now with a Budweiser beside me and 2 cats on top of me.

PEACE !:)

As far as the TURP, trans urethral resection of the prostate. Under anesthesia, they use a resectoscope to enter through the penis inside the urethra. The remove part of the wall of the urethra to help open and enlarge the diameter. Once that is done a catheter is placed to help wash out the urethra of blood clots for approximatley 24 hours. It is removed and then urinate on your own. A certain amount is required before leaving the hospital. For about one month you will pass a small amount of blood in the urine. There will also be a bit of discomfort from the procedure and trying to urinate. SO far after 9 months, no problems. This is NOT removal of the prostate. Get a good urologist that has a long track record of doing TURPs.
