It isn't necessary to have two chaperones present for an adolescent's exam. There should be some privacy. However, visual inspection of the genitals is important, so I don't think the above noted exam was adequate. The underwear should be completely removed. In addition, visual inspection of the anus is important. That means, for example, siblings being examined separately unless each one verbally agrees to each other's presence.

Erections in physicals aren't that common, but they do "pop up" every once in a while. It is a perfectly normal reaction for a man to have, and his body is designed to react to touching. When it does happen, I don't comment, unless he is stammering out apologies. Then I reassure them it happens all the time (it doesnt), and that it is perfectly normal (it is), and that it shows that all the parts are working normally (they are). It happens much more frequently with teen boys getting their school / athletic physicals, partially because they are boys, but also because at that age you need to examine each testicle for any abnormalities.

Sorry Jason, but you lost me with rectal exams in adolescents. I know of no protocol where inspecting the anus of a adolescent, muc hless an internal in called for in a general examination, without a patient complaint about that area. Neither is it necessary to palpate an adolescent's penis. A visual inspection is fine, along with inquiry as to any issues (Particularly important in uncircumcized boys). I strongly discourage any patient to have their parents in the examination room of an adolescent, particularly if that child is going through puberty. It is totally unneccesary to embarass the patient.

Doctor's are fully aware that erections happen, and it is A)not induicative of your orientation B)most doctor's could care less what your orientation is anyway. Penises react to stimulation, and they also react to nerves. The combination of being examined and being touched causes erections. and 6.5 to 7 " is larger than most.

20 years as an RN in a hospital, and I’ve seen thousands of erections. Your wife is right, they are fairly common place particularly teen boys when you are giving them sponge baths. I think part of it is being exposed in front a woman, part of it is obviously being touched, and part of it is the lack of privacy in hospital rooms prevents them from masturbating as they wish. Have to laugh though when you are prepping a boy for surgery in obvious pain, and while youre shaving them, the big boy pops up. You guys ever not horny? Ever mind I know the answer to that!
