I have read this article as part of reseacrh for a high school persuasive essay that I have to do. It helped a lot. I completely disgree with the motion to institute random locker searches because while it is the school's locker, they have given each student the chance to use them and store thier personal items in them.
I myself am doing a persuasive essay on this same topic. i have had my locker searched and i didnt like it one bit. they invaded my privacy!!! i understand that they want us to be safe but they did give us the locker to use for the year n for them to just search it when ever they want is stupid. we have our rights too. granted the world is getting harsher by the second but metal dectors and dogs would help a great deal. the people would be happy n so would the students.

personally...i feel that locker checks are intended for the safety of the students within the school. if someone has a gun stashed in their locker for some lame reason then i would hope someone finds it b4 it gets put 2 use. imagine how many deaths could be prevented. even with drugs... if someone has frikin weed n their locker and decides to smoke it b4 leaving school...they have a good possibility of being so high that they crash!!!(or even with alcohol 4 that matter.) thats a sucky way to die. wake up ppl!!! the locker checks are 4 ur safety and u wldnt be complaining unless u have something to hide!!!

<quoted text>listen kelly im age 15 i have no problem what so ever with them searching my locker, the only reason kids have problems is because they have something to hide, and to be perfectly honest why care about drugs when their are weapons to be found? why care about your new coat getting a little dirt or your make-up thing falling on the ground, would you rather be dead? i mean seriously most kids are so damn spoiled in this country it makes me freakin sick.
rock on! I totally agree

I think this will only catch the ones stupid enough to store it in their locker. Recalling my years in school, the stuff everyone would be looking for is utilized so frequently on bathroom breaks and recesses that it really makes very little sense to even store it in a locker. I suppose someone selling would be more likely to do it.

Yes, I was the one that they always wanted to, but never could, bust!!!!

Do kids here even really have lockers? Where I went to school, on the mainland, both middle school and high school kids were provided with a full size locker that you could fit yourself inside, if you were of a mind to and were of average size. They were free of charge. Since they were free of charge though, they were considered school property and school officials had the legal right to search them.

Right. I want to go into surgury and have my doctor toke up just before grabbing the knife...and don't give me that "But alcohol is legal" tripe....sure it is and you can instantly check for use with a breathalyzer...when you come up with an instant check for pot give me a call, till then, keep it against the law.
But is anyone actually testing your doctor for alcohol before he cuts into you? Or for any of the other mind-altering drugs that those in the medical field can fairly readily get their hands on?

Supreme Court of the United States already ruled on the legality of locker searches. Do the research. For schools because of the safety and effectiveness mandates are held to the lower level of proof which is reasonable suspicion. Since lockers are school property and there is no expectation of privacy for school property,it can be searched especially the rules on locker use clearly state this caveat. The same could be said for anything brought on campus such as bags and electronic devices. For criminal prosecution it would be back up to probably cause. In any case the case law is for reasonable searches which means no strip searches unless it is at the probably cause level. So if they were looking for drugs it would be okay to do a pat down search, but unless something truly unusual was found it would be difficult to go the extreme of having a strip search. The body cavity search in any case would require a court order and is the most extreme form of search.

i think that locker searches are wrong because kids might have personal things in there and they might not want anybody to see whats in there lockers
