California May Start Tracking HIV Patients by Name

Full story: KTLA-TV Los Angeles

Opposition has lifted to legislation that would allow California health authorities to track HIV patients by name, effectively ending a years-long debate over privacy concerns and paving the way for the bill's ...

Government doesn't seem to care about privacy rights. HIV patients and all people have a right to keep their health records private.

We need to reform our government by electing only people who will never support such a bad law.

The innocent have nothing to hide. Those who do good have nothing to fear from the government, but those who do evil.

If they want the government to fork out millions of dollars to invest in research to find a cure for a disease they wouldn't have got had they kept their pants zipped up, then they need to fulfill the criteria that the government sets forth. They were free to not give out the names if they were willing to have the government funding to stop...it was their choice.

Dear Second Thoughts,

I have a family member who as a child received HIV during a transplant surgery. The prejudices this child has to endure are absurd. The medical records of ALL Americans should be private or there will be even more negative effects on those who already have to suffer your prejudices. I take offence to your simple minded solutions and suggestions. Do you think that if a family member of yours gets brain cancer that it is because they held bad thoughts? Perhaps you should think twice before writting your uneducated uninformed dribble.

yep the same thing with megan law. There no privacy for other people in the family that take in sex offender. Im not talking about just dangerous one but also boyfriend/girlfriend underage that are on the megan law list.

while i do feel sorry for the innocent children who's irresponsible parents gave them the disease or for anyone who got the disease living a resposible lifestyle, i dont really care for those who got the disease from careless living. You knew the risk and ignored them. this is part of what comes along with the teritory. you want to disobey Gods laws by having pre-marital or homosexual sex, then dont cry when evryone knows how much of a pervert you are.if you are going around having sex and arent married, then you deserve what you get. sex in the eyes of God always has been and always will be meant for a husband and wife. us faithful spouses have nothing to worry about. its the ones who constantly break Gods laws and cry for sympathy. how about you change your lifestyle and you wouldnt have to worry about everyone knowing how stupid you wee for contracting aids.

I truely sympathize with this child's situation, but as you and I both know this is the exception not the rule. Whereas, many did receive HIV from transfusions during the 80's, the vast majority up to and including the 90's and 2000's got it from unprotected sex and I.V. drug use.

As I said this situation is the exception not the rule so just because your situation hits close at home doesn't make this view as dribble. In fact, you should be more energized against those who allow and allowed the spread of this disease undetected and stop protecting those who carry and transmit this disease which is why an innocent child could've so easily got it.

There is no shame in being an innocent victim, but there is shame in protecting the culprit.

Are you serious with this post? The post from 'Humble' said that the child got HIV NOT AIDS during a transplant! Is that perverted behaviour? You people who post your onesided, judgmental opinons should educate yourselves before making such statments. Did you learn how to judge and slander others who do not agree with you from the Bible? You can keep your "Gods Laws" for yourself. I am sure he (God) really enjoys it when you treat others in such a manner. Thanks.

What you fail to recognize is that it is not just the gay community that has aids. It is not just the gay community that will be vilified by this attack on our privacy and civil liberties. Check out Germany in the 1930’s and 40’s. They started getting names for their treachery early on too. The America I grew up in would have considered this a communist threat. The constitution that was created to protect us from what is happening now is being dismantled; piece-by-piece. The worst thing is we are sitting by and letting it happen. HIV positive folks, whether homosexual or heterosexual, have enough to worry about in just surviving without our government making the new “black list” that will eventually be used against them.

“Christians” have done more harm to the world than any other group in world history. More wars, genocides, and murders in the name of the Christianity than any other group since the beginning of the religion. It’s a disease people. It ceased along time ago to be a homosexual problem because a Christian – President Reagan thought it might help eliminate the gay issue and ignored the advice of the Surgeon General of the United States. I have been with my partner for 12 years. We have been faithful to one another and raised a child together. We have 5 grandchildren that thrive. You don’t have a corner on life, love, and family. Nor are you a true follower of Jesus Christ.

If you remember it started out in the gay community. Then it got in the blood supply unnoticed and was given to unsuspecting medical patients needing transfusions. Then the virus modified to pass into the heterosexual population. So, don't give me this it's not a gay thing garbage. But, that's not even the issue I was pointing out. I was talking about anyone who couldn't keep their pants zipped up...gay and non-gay alike.

Unfortunately, the America that I grew up in became the America it is today. Had there been a little more restraint, we wouldn't be reaping all the bad blood (forgive the pun) that we've sown.

It may be ok for someone your child is dating to give your child AIDS, because you don't know they're infected, but it's not ok for me and mine. If you want to play Russian Roulette with your child's life, that's up to you, but as for me, I love my children and if I can I'll protect my children any way that I can.

The bad pun is forgiveable but not the mixed metaphor. Unless you're growing blood sausage in your garden of hatred or something.

Actually, The most common theory on the origin of AIDS is that it emerged from south-central Africa. Studies confirm that the spread first started in Africa and became an epidemic in Zaire, Burundi, Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania and Kenya. The AIDS virus may well have jumped into the human race from African primates and monkeys. Perhaps when monkey hunters or trappers touched bloody tissue or were scratched. The first documented cases were heterosexuals in Tanzania and Haiti. However when it came to the US, it was most prevalent among the homosexual population. I believe it is now most prevalent among the African-American population, does that mean we should shun them too?

What exactly do you mean it "modified" to pass into the heterosexual population? Do you have some bizzare notion that gay people have different physiologies than straight people?

It never ceases to amaze me how many people are open to the government's prying eyes as long as they think it doesn't concern them. At issue is the tracking of HIV patients by name, one would be extremely naive to think that it would stop there. Open up the medical records of HIV patients today and sooner than later, your medical records would be just as easily available. I have a clean bill of health, but I sure as hell wouldn't want to have my private information readily available. And how did this thread even steer toward any mention of God and the bible or the origins of this disease? Regardless of how this disease originated, regardless of who has it (age, sex, sexual orientation)- this is a disease that is here to stay for the time being. At issue should be prevention, treatment, and education. The more people are educated on the transmission, implications, and safe practices to avoid infection the better off we all are. It is easy to hide behind a bible and preach and judge, but it is silly to think you are safe for doing so. Just because you're monogamous in your marriage doesn't guarantee your spouse is and in small communities such as Earlimart, where the basic education on HIV and AIDS isn't as accessible it is a dangerous assumption to make that you're safe from it. God bless those who suffer from the disease, let he be the one to judge these souls. He seems more qualified to do so.

In no way, it was just commenting on a virus' ability to modify and change itself to accommodate its enviornment. The location of "injection" of this virus dictates that it must change to accommodate its enviornment if it is to survive and proliferate. You should know this.
