Don't forget about HELPING local animal shelters in El Paso, including Animal Cruelty Hotline of El Paso, Animal Rescue League, Humane Society, Pet Guardian Angel, Saint Animal Resue in East El Paso, Pet Haven,, the national AMERICANS AGAINST HORSE SLAUGHTER, PETA, local Animal Control and others.

Consider donating in funds, volunteering, adopting, pushing for legislation against (over) breeding or simply speaking out for the most innocent, helpless and lovable.

El Paso Times, this is one of the best articles that you had in a long time. Maybe finally this is the step that it's going to take for El Paso to look at themselves and see how they make this a better place and a more progressive city up to par consciously with forward thinking cities like Los Angeles, New York and Austin. You know places where people really give a damn about social issues.

We just succesfully concluded the second year, 2-day Homeless Veterans Stand Down here in El Paso. The event took place at the Texas National Guard Armory. And we were able to help 165 veterans.

We had about 22 agencies providing services along with being able to provide clothing, boots, and sleeping bags, etc to the veterans.

The American Legion, DAV, VFW, Marine Corps League and Catholic War Veterans donated money and food along with volunteers in helping out there.

The auxiliaries provided volunteers in cooking and providing some great hot meals for everyone involved there.

1st Armored Division also had soldiers who volunteered in helping out there.

That is just one example of a diversified group from our community working together and volunteering their time.

The quote about volunteering at the end of this great article by Muriel Thomas-Borders, director of the AmeriCorps program at United Way of El Paso, is awesome.

"It instills a sense of pride and accomplishment," she said, "and also empowerment because they see that they can make a difference in their community. Not only that, for the nonprofits it has an impact."

That's another good point. The nonprofits that are depended upon by so many people themselves depend on volunteers."

we are summarily excluded by any pieces in El Paso Times asking for volunteers yet we own our own kennel and are a 501 3 C Charity in good standing with IRS and unlike most nonprofits, we will show our books to anyone. We need volunteers badly and our feeling is specific editors and writers at the Times want their pet charities to 'make it' but hope we will fold up and get out of business. Our group or one preceeding it have been in business for 25 years and adopted over 12,000 pets we can calculate by dog tags we issued. WE are a no kill shelter and anyone leaving their pet with us can rely on getting a photo of the adoption and know we will take the pet back if it comes to that and does not work out. Like any no kill shelter it doesn't mean never kill. If a pet is violently mean or aggressive, cannot be confined or has social problems we cannot over come with our means and expertise or is sick beyond our ability to handle it they are humanely put down. This is a very low number and it is a last resort. We have worked with and adopted 3 legged pets, dogs with diabetes, fence jumpers, and treated ehrlicia and heart worms and readopted. We do not seek sick pets to enter our system but try to keep them alive and adopted. We have a kennel and have about 100 pets and adopt about 50 pets a month today, March, 2011. We desparately need help some of the agencies touted by the Times adopt 1 to 2 dogs a month, no dogs at all or are mostly a front to get tax free purchases for a private hobby.
