Why don't the Chambersburg teachers tranfer to Greencastle where the teachers earn about 10% more than in Chambesburg.
If Greencastle can afford decent wages, move there.
I did....and am greatly enjoying life in the Greencastle-Antrim School District. Yes, we pay more taxes but, as a retired teacher and lifelong admirer of education, its money well-invested. Its hard to believe that 40 years ago when I first relocated to this area it was Greencastle who was the laughing stock of the county and CASD which stood head and shoulders above the rest. I guess its a case of "...you get what you pay for."

You make the case for me that teachers are not Professional's. You do not "get what you pay for". If that were true, we could just double the teacher salaries and all the kids would be able to read, do simple math and be successful in society. DC is an example that more money does not fix the problem. We need professional teachers that are in the business to do their best - not get rich.

There are good teachers and there are far too many bad teachers. I have had children taught in this district for over 12 years. From the outside looking in, there are a lot of cuts that can be made. I have volunteered in the schools for several years - if you spend some time inside the walls, you really see the problem areas.

Not one teacher in Franklin county is "rich" and never will be. The truly wealthy people that pull all the strings would never allow that to happen.
I can't understand how the powers that be have gotten the middle class to tear each other apart over the scraps, while they just become RICHER and RICHER and RICHER and..........

Penn State quarterback Rob Bolden could seek a transfer following a freshman year in which he started the first half of the season before being benched for sophomore Matt McGloin. Bolden's mother, Tonia Williams, told The Associated Press on Tuesday that Bolden and his father were traveling to Happy Valley to speak with the coaching staff. Yes, Rob, leave PSU and go to Shippensburg or Shepherd or Mansfield U. of PA.

Have to agree with HUH's post. Too many people willing to regurgitate what they hear on their favorite style of news, FOX, CNN, NBC, whatever... "The economy is baaaaaaaaad! Everyone has to suffer." (Everyone but those with real money.)

All the while, Wall Street and large corporations have yet another record year of profits and gains.(They always have another record year.) Hundred-Millionaires become Billionaires by giving themselves another tax cut.

Meanwhile, people that make between 30K and 70K point fingers and scream at each other claiming the dung pile across the street is greener than their own.

Truly remarkable!

The current proposal is inadequate. I'm voting for proposal 'C' which would grant an 87K salary to all teachers with 3 or more years experience. Each subsequent year will result in a 3K salary increase. The school board also needs to allocate funds to allow for the higher of teacher staff to help grade texts, write lesson plans, and alleviate the absurd workload from the teachers.

So - I should go through the list of people I pay an hourly wage and ensure that teachers are at the top of the list! NOT!
Teachers are public sector employees. They are paid by taxes.
Have you heard of supply and demand? For jobs which there are few people willing or able to meet the qualifications, the wage is higher. How many applications does CASD get for every opening? As long as people are applying, the wages must be OK.
Because one applies, makes them qualified not.

Apply, I could for a brain surgeon position. Qualified I am not!

May the force be with you!

Everyone keeps saying teachers are asking for more. We are not asking for more. We are asking to be paid according to the scale that was presented when we were hired. If a boss tells you "We will pay you $10 and hour your first year,$11 your second year, and $12 your third year; and you ask for $12 your third year...you are NOT asking for anything more or new. You are asking your employer to follow through on the offer that was made when you decided to work for that company as opposed to another. Yes, times are tough...for all of us. I have cleaned out my ten year savings account in one year...I am no exception.
Please just acknowledge that teachers ACCEPTED no pay raise this year. A third party fact finder determined there is MORE than enough to pay what the district originally planned WITHOUT cuts and WITHOUT raises in taxes.
As far as fair share, I say who needs it? I began teaching without being a member of the union, but it didn't take me long to learn that I cannot always rely on my employer in good faith. I don't think anyone needs to be swayed to become a member of the union. They will decide on their own, in time.
I love the kids I teach, and I don't want the first desparate person...ready to jump in just because they need a job, to be the one working with my kids. You shouldn't either. You should want someone who KNOWS they do a good job...a job that is worth paying for. I love my kids at school, but I have two little girls at home that I will always love more (although they have accused me more than once of caring more about my school kids). I will stand up for my right to take care of them, even in hard times. Any good parent would. I was given a job with certain promises. Don't give me more. Just give me what you said you would give me...since we all know it is there.
Wonderful speech..Many people were also depending on having jobs last year and they don't have them now. My spouse is a professional with a degree from a very prominent school and he took a pay cut to keep his job, along with and increase in health co-pays and he hadn't had a raise in about 3 years prior to that. So to say you cleaned out your 10 year savings account, all that tells me is that you lived beyond your means with the hope of getting a raise. You need educated in finances.
