New name: Engine Company 17 in Washington, D.C., is to be renamed the Jackson W. Gerhart House on June 7. The Chambersburg native for whom it will be named served 32 years as a D.C. firefighter.

We need more men and women in this world, and our community, like Fireman Jack. This is a great honor, and one that is well deserved for a man who gave his life for the protection and safety of others. Thank you Jack, and to those who continue to serve today.

Jack was my cousin. We are the same age, the first grandkids born in our family of that generation. We were close growing up, but didn't see each other so much when we went separate directions as adults. He did a remarkable geneology of the Gerhart family which I treasure. His dad and my mother were siblings.. Jackie, as I always called him, was a special person. He always gave it his all. Although I didn't see him regularly except sadly at family funerals, I still feel a great loss that he is no longer with us. We emailed each other frequently and argued politics in a friendly way..It was at his funeral that I realized just how many lives were touched by Jack, and I will always be privileged to have had him as my cousin.
