There is absolutely nothing - zilch - zero wrong with the new public school menu. It generally tastes very good, is nutritionally sound and contains adequate amounts of fiber. So where does the problem lie?
The problem is the vast majority of these kids are conditioned to eat mommy & daddy's junk food beginning from the age they started watching Barney the Dinosaur. The problem is all of this junk food, snacks and over-processed crap in the average American's diet. In most American households today the standard nutritional quality of an average meal is far below what it was two generations ago. Today, fewer and fewer families value "family meal time" as quality time. Almost every parent seemingly has the same story. There is always too many things going on for everyone to be home at the same time to sit down and eat together...unless it's 10:00 PM in front of the TV. Habitual eating later in the evening is a recipe for blood sugar spikes that may lead to diabetes. Eating later often causes sleeplessness and problems staying awake the next day.
The average family shopper over time tends to be purchasing increasingly poorer qualities of food. Unfortunately, because of this continued infiltration of junk food, snack food and expensive, heavily-processed microwavable "meals", many school kids today might get to the opportunity to eat "whole food" in a family type setting maybe a few times a year at certain holidays.
Lots of diet improvements begin in the home if we want our kids to appreciate REAL food at school.
Are you telling us that our boro parents are so busy running to and fro fundraising and selling "cookie dough" to boost dollars into their "wish lists for kids" that they don't have time for quality meal-time with their kids; so they just defer that job to the government to "feed the children?"

Howie, you must certainly be aware of the fact that $1 an hour of wages in some parts of the world catapults the recipient of those wages into the upper middle class in his country. Let us not assume everyone has the same basis costs and lifestyles we enjoy. Two different businesses in this country producing the same product can have vastly different cost structures. Blaming the guy with the lower cost structure for your choices gets you no where in a hurry. It also fails to correct the competitive imbalances that already exist. Better to adjust your modes of production to increase the per capita productivity, whether through trimming the fat or through the utilization of expertise, technology, and equipment to better compete.
Like it or not we have a brave new world staring us in the face and we can sit on our collective kiesters and complain or we can begin assessing our resources and begin figuring out how to beat them. I vote for the latter.

The same school board demanding accountability, asking tough questions and also the same heartless board who insisted on charging the Frechette family who just lost their 17 yr old son, one of our students,the building usage fee to use the high school for his service. This family is grieving and you couldn't waive this fee??! Doesn't it say in the contract this fee can be waived?! Thanks to Ron Malone for again coming to the rescue. Do you really care about these students or is it all about the money and your egos??!!This community is counting the days for you 3 heartless people to be out. We don't need people like you with your own agendas in this district. We have come together as a community and our number one goal will be to rebuild this school board with people who REALLY care about these students.
Who are the WE that "have come together" voting revenge against three good people?" Is this the same group of "WE" who have now rallied "three times" against these same "three good people" in "WE" attempts to gain for the Springboro Education Association more power and control our students "education money?"

Only coal in boro stockings for those supporting the failed agenda of "we are one with ron malone" campaign; voting revenge against good neighbors in our Springboro school district and community.
Could it be that some "people" like Ron Malone owes this community an apology for allowing his "representatives" to continue their bully attacks on this blog.

(-;
Who do you suppose these two "reform-minded", concerned citizens might be? Dr. Kohls now has bigger irons in much larger fires.
What will Wendy Kull do? Was she thinking of running next year, or is she just filling in short-term to improve her resume? Might Doug Wiedeman consider running? Or no-taxJack Chrisman?
On the side that represents wholesale taxing and spending with little to no accountability to the public, I'd say Lisa Babb has a 99.44% certainty of running again because she is a notorious sore loser. Who else might run to back teachers union interests? Take your pick among the pretentious.
Because Lisa Babb IS a sore loser, she has NEVER stopped "running" her campaign of personal attacks against the winning agenda of our school board representatives who support our district's new philosophy of "children FIRST budgeting." And no doubt Ms. Babb will continue her arrogant denial that she was not chosen in 2011, during the year of 2013; just as she is doing throughout the 2012 year, falsely accusing the new board members of "making decisions that hurt our kids!"

Don't know much about the real "meat" of politics;(what do you mean that Kelly Kohls has bigger irons in much larger fires?);
but, while recognizing the achievements of our school district, under the leadership of Dr. Kohls in just three years as an elected official on the Board of Education, it is agreed that Springboro families and taxpaying homeowners WILL rally
tirelessly to re-elect Kelly Kohls in 2013 to serve our children's best interest four more years!
Springboro, we've only just begun! We cannot allow the "vote for revenge" in 2013 to REVERSE the achievements and success being made by our current 4-1 BOE majority in the best interest of our strong schools and our strong community!

If Lisa Babb feels the urge to make the call as to which board members "made decisions that hurt our kids", then she needs to look at the cloud from both sides. Scott Anderson's extremely hasty departure didn't do much to help our kids. Don Miller's current obvious state of boredom and apathy isn't doing a whole lot to help our kids. Can you imagine the heightened level of productivity Ms. Babb might bring to our board meetings?....;-)

Anderson has always been in it for himself, kids just happen to be there. I'd say Anderson's cowardly retreat was the best thing he's done since he ran away from a city council challenge.

All valid points. Anderson walks away, and is publically humiliated as a result. Kull is picked from nominees to finish his term. Wendy gets along well with everyone and is doing a tremendous job. Every other Tuesday evening Don Miller exudes the body language of a person wanting to be anyplace other than Springboro High School
Moving toward the 2013 board campaign season, I'd say things couldn't be looking much worse for Lisa Babb's overall agenda.

It's exciting to read in the November 15 Springboro Sun that our
"Springboro Community Schools are in good shape financially, according to district officials."

"With today's economy, most districts are NOT passing new levies, Petrey said. "The board will have to put a RENEWAL of a levy that brings in $9.2 million on the ballot in 2013," Petrey said.

With greatest respect for personal circumstances of all Springboro families and taxpaying homeowners; we must consider the comments
of board members as stated in the November 15 Springboro Sun article: Schools 'in good shape'

Board member Jim Rigano said, "I don't think there's any question that we will have to be on the ballot with that renewal."
...District officials have been making cuts that will help in the future, according to superintendent Todd Petrey....
School officials must follow the spending habits of the public,
according to board member Wendy Kull.

Voters need to follow closely the public school board meetings as this renewal levy process unfolds; making sure that "collective demands" for educational services do not override individual rights of Springboro families and taxpaying homeowners.
