'Please, Save My Planet'

Because of my great interest in animals, I saw the picture of the polar bear on the editorial page of The Courant and read the whole article [editorial, May 7, "Protect The Polar Bear"]. I am glad that, ...

Nice to see a young person so interested in the world around him, however, now climatologists are claiming there may be a decade of global cooling between now and 2020, how can that be if we as humans are causing global warming?

I wonder if that ball of fire in the sky has anything to do with the temperature here. You know, the one that is 1,300,000 times bigger than the Earth?

more sentimental crap based on the Disney school of anthropomorphism, and using revolting smug little kids to put over a fraudulent message. I wonder why polar bear populations are increasing, and I wonder why the little kids don't get told?

We have to think about the CHILDREN! What about the CHILDREN!

For thousands of years man has dreamed of being able to control the weather. Now it turns out we've been doing it all the time.

Who knew?!

I love this debate on whether or not we are destroying the planet. People get so pissed about it. "The poor polar bears." If you were hungry enough you eat the polar bears or use their fur to stay warm without thinking twice. We seem to care so much about a few bears but we slaughter millions of other animals a day. My mouth is watering just thinking about the juicy burger I am going to eat when I get home.

In the 1800's when the British Parliament was arguing whether to end the slave trade, one of the politicians stood up and claimed that the slaves were brought up for exercise breaks during the voyage. He didn't mention that the "exercise" was done with whips.

When the Canadian parliament was discussing whether they should pass laws against child labour, the coal mining companies argued that it would cost too much to make the tunnels big enough for adults.

You global warming deniers on this thread are on the same moral level. Worse, because the harm is greater.

Because driving a petrol car is EXACTLY the same as keeping slaves or sending a six-year old up your chimney to sweep it out.

It appears that you would rather vilify those who disagree with you than respond to them with facts and logic. Calling someone names and telling them they are immoral has a lesser chance of winning them over then simply showing them the data that supports your conclusion. I think you are hurting your cause by behaving foolishly and creating enemies.

Hi there, sanctimonious Bill. Maybe you were not around or aware in the 1970s when some of the same scientists that are scaring us about global warming today were scaring us about GLOBAL COOLING. They were every bit as sure in the 1970s that we needed to destroy some of our ozone layer to generate more global warming, or spread black coal dust on the snow and ice in the arctic to melt the ice and snow. Do some research. You can start with references in George Will's article in the Washington Post on April 02, 2006:

"Science magazine (Dec. 10, 1976) warned of "extensive Northern Hemisphere glaciation." Science Digest (February 1973) reported that "the world's climatologists are agreed" that we must "prepare for the next ice age." The Christian Science Monitor ("Warning: Earth's Climate is Changing Faster Than Even Experts Expect," Aug. 27, 1974) reported that glaciers "have begun to advance," "growing seasons in England and Scandinavia are getting shorter" and "the North Atlantic is cooling down about as fast as an ocean can cool." Newsweek agreed ("The Cooling World," April 28, 1975) that meteorologists "are almost unanimous" that catastrophic famines might result from the global cooling that the New York Times (Sept. 14, 1975) said "may mark the return to another ice age." The Times (May 21, 1975) also said "a major cooling of the climate is widely considered inevitable" now that it is "well established" that the Northern Hemisphere's climate "has been getting cooler since about 1950."

There are plenty of respected scientists that dsagree with the dire predictions of folks like you. So excuse some of us for not getting real hysterical this time around.

Now you won't meet anyone as into recycling, reducing, and reusing as I am. I keep my thermostat at 62 degrees in winter, and 80 degrees in summer. I recycle everything plastic, paper, metal, or glass. I use reusable cloth bags at grocery stores. And much more. If you're not doing at least as much you have no right to lecture me.

Everyone - please do all you can to use fewer resources, including energy, and to stop all types of polution. But also use common sense about global warming.

You notice that every thing you mentioned involved humans, not the enviroment, not the climate. All that post proved was the wisdom of not trusting politicians.

I for one do not trust them to actually think the matter out before running off with the man made gloval warming crowd.

It is so nice to see our youth taking interest in our planet and those creatures who suffer b/c of Man's negligence.

It is disgusting to me that people can watch in total apathy as more and more animals reach extinction levels. To think that Man doesn't have control as to the continuation of species, flora, fauna is pure ignorance. It is our responsibility as the "most intelligent" species to care for those who cannot speak.

time to crawl out from under the rock you've been hiding! we aren't talking about the polar bear populations in zoos silly!

In areas where long-term studies are available, populations are showing signs of stress due to shrinking sea ice. Canada's Western Hudson Bay population has dropped 22% since the early 1980s.

Stressed Polar Bears? Should they be taking Valium or Pilates classes?

Or just listening to light FM?
