Senate blocks GOP bid to speed offshore drilling

A GOP bid to expand and hasten offshore oil drilling in the face of $4-a-gallon gasoline prices suffered an overwhelming defeat in the Senate on Wednesday, four days after President Barack Obama directed his administration to ramp up U.S. oil production.

The Interior Department has issued 53 shallow-water permits since last June, when new safety standards were imposed, Stevens said. Permits for 14 deepwater wells have been approved since late February, when industry demonstrated it could meet new standards on containing oil spills.

more than 70 percent of offshore acres currently leased to oil companies are inactive, defined as either not producing oil or gas or those that do not have approved exploration or development plans. The area could hold more than 11 billion barrels of oil and 50 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, the Post said.

"These are resources that belong to the American people, and they expect those supplies to be developed in a timely and responsible manner and with a fair return to taxpayers," Salazar said. Oil companies counter that many of the leases require lengthy planning, environmental and seismic data collection before exploration wells can be sunk, time not counted in the government's definition of active leases

Pass a law saying that all American oil and gas produced from American oil and gas fields must be refined and sold in the USA. Then watch the Republican true colors come out. They will fight to keep selling that oil on the international market in order to keep prices and profits at their highest level at the expense of the American consumer

Obama: Foreign Nation Building while US is Broke

The White House unveils a $2 billion multiyear economic aid package for Egypt

Mr. Obama, who is set to address Americans — and, more significantly, Muslims around the world — from the State Department on Thursday morning, may yet have something surprising up his sleeve. One administration official said that there remained debate about whether Mr. Obama would formally endorse Israel’s pre-1967 borders as the starting point for negotiations over a Palestinian state, a move that would send an oratorical signal that the United States expected Israel to make concessions.

But Mr. Obama did not plan to present an American blueprint for peace, White House officials said, and it remained unclear if he would even endorse a Palestinian state on pre-1967 lines, a move opposed, administration officials said, by his chief Middle East adviser, Dennis Ross. Mr. Obama did seek to increase pressure on Syria by imposing largely "Symbolic" sanctions on its leader, President Bashar al-Assad.

You're an Idiot.

No need to write a law for something that already happens for the most part except for California that refuses to take most Alaskan Oil Because of an Indonesian OIL DEAL concocted by Jerry Brown's father years ago to Make the Brown's OIL BARRONS.

Also, Reducing Supply to the Market WILL RAISE PRICES dummy! We will PAY more for Oil then! Duh!

Vote the democrats out of the Senate. And watch how much things change when the republicans are in charge. Democrats just have not one clue or care about helping the average american. It has been proven time and time again.

How naive can one get ?

How naive can one be ?

So your telling the folks on TOPIX that oil drilled in Alaska shouldn't be refined in Canada transported by pipeline but instead should go by ship to Houston or New Jersey ?

The Lefty Eco-Freaks have stopped new refinery construction for the last 30 years. The only refinery growth in the U.S. in the last 30 years has been expansion of existing plants.

Do you know that the U.S. is the only energy rich country inporting energy and why is that ?

BTW , Texas crude is running $12-14 cheaper than Dubai crude . Drill more and it will drop more.

Tea Party motto " Drill , baby drill ".
Obama motto " Drill , Brazil drill ".

How naive can a LEFTY be ?

<quoted text>The Republicans are right back to their old tricks. They want to speed up the permit process, cut funding for supervision, and then if something goes wrong again, blame it on the Democrats. I guess the Gulf oil disaster was last year's news. Out of sight, out of mind.
Make your points Swampmudd. Progressives can make their points. But now the Repubs will start to control the direction. Frig politics. You can't eat politics. If they do not lower the cost of living, they will all be voted out.

GasBuddy Blog -- Now that 2010 is on the doorstep knocking, it's time to take a look back and see how good, or bad, it was.

We began 2009 with gasoline prices averaging $1.625 across the United States- January 1, 2009 was actually the beginning of the uptrend, the first day that prices began to rise. Prices didn't rise above $2 until March 26, 2009, when they were $2.011.

The peak in 2009 for gasoline prices occurred on Halloween, when prices were $2.688. The largest jump between days occurred between October 22 and 23, when average prices jumped from $2.628 to $2.660 just overnight.

In Canada, we saw very similar results. Prices were lowest in Canada on January 4, 2009, averaging 73.336c/L before climbing to their peak on 10...

Regulate the oil market. Stop letting foreign companies pump and export American oil. Impose price controls. Or stop bitching about it.

But of course you are opposed to any controls that could actually bring the price down.

But of course he is the president and I don't care. Just bring the prices down. Now they passe laws like gays in military in December. There could have been so many other laws passed.
