All those things you said don't matter, do in fact matter......"These circumstances -- the location of the crime on Erie's east side, the victims' criminal past, the fact that the two victims may well have been targeted -- are irrelevant to the fact that a young man was killed, a victim of gun violence."
This is all relevant.
And this: "We need answers about Lamas tavern, 1102 East Ave., because neighbors have complained about this bar and suspect that trouble originates there.
It sure sounds like it does."
Trouble does not originate from a bar and its floors and windows and drinks and food or whatever.
Is it a troubled spot? Probably but it has nothing to do with the bar. Perhaps its clientele? Close it and see what happens.
The trouble will just move to another bar and neighborhood.
The reason this crap happens is at some point people lost respect for one another and themselves as human beings. Life is cheap. A lot of parents lacked the good sense to teach their kids any values. Babies having babies? Exactly....

Unfortunately, the problem of violence in the inner city is not endemic to Erie, nor is it an overnight phenomenom.

Therefore, these events will not end without a prolonged effort - which must be the primary concern of the folks directly affected.

The root of ignorance and the resultant violence is poor education and the consequence of the inablitiy to qualify for good jobs - as is personified by the inability for local African-Americans to pass the Erie police officer test.

This stands out as a FAILURE of African-American leadership in Erie.

Why do NFL allstar football players graduate from our schools and not students who can pass a simple police officer civil service exam?

That is a FAILURE of community leaders to DEMAND better.

Even more damning is the FAILURE of parents in the community to get involved in their children's education!

Barack Obama is correct in stating that personal accountability must be taken for one's own failure.

There is no excuse for parents who can not take time to go to a PTA meeting for the sake of their children's future.

Any school is only as good as its PTA - no matter how much money you put into it.

Parents would do well to demand excellence in the classroom rather than the football field.

My name is Season and I'm a former "Erieite". I was born and raised on the lower East side. I moved to Virginia in 2003.
I am writing this in disgust of how bad my old neighborhood has gotten. I grew up on 3rd and Parade. My friends and I could play outside even after the street lights would come on and never had anything to worry about. Now, as an adult, I wouldn't in million years consider walking the lower East side at night. I wouldn't even want to during the day. The neighborhood seems to be overrun by drug dealers and users.
I came up to visit my family (who lives on 8th and Parade) the weekend of July 11th and during my visit my mother's friend had gotten jumped and beaten on 7th and Parade. My mother and her friend were walking from a local bar two blocks from her home and a man approached them asking if they needed anything. I'm sure they meant drugs. My mom and friend told him to go away and they didn't want nor were they looking for anything. Minutes later her friend was jumped by four men. My mom luckily got away and ran home. Minutes later her friend comes home bloody and beaten. His injures consisted of a broken jaw, broken nose, lost two teeth & had a bad gash over his eye. For what? They didn't even rob him (not that that would make more sense) they just beat him for fun.

My point is that something needs to be done to better these neighborhoods. I know that the mayor and the head of police have decided to add more police to certain shifts but that just isn't enough. There are bars, just about, on every corner. It should be illegal to have that many bars in a residential area. Close the bars down. If someone wants to go out they can go downtown where there are more police and it's better monitored.

Make laws and give out fines to tenants who have an abundance of trash outside of their home. Fine landlords for dilapidated homes. Maybe put a police station like the Franklin Terrace has in bad areas such as the lower east side.

I have never witnessed anything such as that beating and I am sick to my stomach.

I don't understand how Erie can spend all kinds of money on building tourist attractions such as the Environment Center at the Peninsula, the Ravine Flyer at Waldamere and the Convention Center but not on cleaning up the city. I know that places such as these bring money and jobs to Erie but you don't think that tourists will, at some point, drive through the bad neighborhoods. I know when I go to a new city I go exploring to see what the city is all about.

What do townships such as Millcreek do to keep their neighborhoods clean and safe?

I am not proud to say that I'm from Erie and will never consider moving back.

They have more than 12 police officers patrolling at one time.

They have a large and diverse tax base to support the police force.

They have mindful people running their government, so not to worry about it being run in to the ground by useless spending as did a former Erie Mayor.

...keep the property at high prices so the undesireables can't afford to but them and live there. There are "some" but they work and pay into the tax base and they aren't happy that much of their money (taxes) go towards welfare and the scum of the earth... take a ride on the Eastside during the day and they are all hanging out on the porch.

"Everton" is right, on all counts. Escalating violence in the inner city is not isolated to Erie. However, the decay of Erie neighborhoods is spreading at an astonishing rate. The violence that accompanying that decay is absolutely frightening.

Erie gov't and communities MUST work together. City gov't must work to attract employers that pay a decent wage & offer training programs.

African-American community leaders must work within the community so that ghetto/prison violence & behavior (including shunning education), drugs & guns are no longer glorified. The white community has absolutely no influence these young men. There is nothing that the white community can do to affect change within these guys, except put them in prison...which only worsens their already violent behavior. The African-American community must step up and have a positive influence.
Unfortunately, things are going to get a lot worse before any real change will occur.
Mr. Crockett's 3 kids don't have a prayer in Erie.

As a taxpayer, gaming funds could have gone to a
"enforcement team(s)" to back and work with the City Police - Governments first job is to protect it's people! Get the D.A. to run "strike teams" in those areas, he has detectives and a host of Fed. help. If we can afford to give millions on projects like a runway extension and have our local people dead, fear for their lives, and love ones hurt, as a taxpayer, I would spring for a "special op's teams - bigger jail! Just an idea.

the loss of "manny" crockett is devastating no matter what the circumstances no one deserves to lose their life to the hands of another
the real victims here are his kids because they will now grow up without a father. i am a single parent and i do see the difference with my son and other boys who have a father. The truth is that we must teach our kids when they are young and the case for many of our kids is that they spend the majority of their day at the community center. What many of you may or not know is that year after year funding for non profit community centers has been cut. now if we cant offer kids an alternative to the street life how are we suppose to detour violence after a child reaches 13 our neighborhood rec centers are no longer appealing to them the streets are. So for all you ppl complaing about our neighborhoods when was the last time you gave to a non profit organization of volunteered some of you time at the JFK, MLK center, Booker T Washington center , Boys and Girls Club, the local YMCA. the only people i see volunteering are those who have to in order to fulfill their community service hours as a condition of parole or probation. Our kids need positive role models. our kids need rec centers that get enough funding to compete with the fast life.OUR KIDS NEED LEADERS WHO CARE ABOUT THEM AND ARE NOT LOOKING FOR A TV PLUG OR ARE LINING THEIR POCKETS WITH FUNDING. STOP COMPLAINING AND DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. IT TAKES A VILLAGE TO RAISE A CHILD!!!!!!!!!!

It takes some caring and responsible parents to raise the kid. Not drugs, welfare, and WIC. These animals need to be parents and not irresponsible drugged up, drunk, unemployed jigs.

Good for you. Do you want a medal or a chest to pin it on?

Here is a thought for you. Since the person who will will call "baby daddy" is just a kid himself. How about "baby daddy" parents step up and show him how to raise the kid? Stop making excuses for these people and make them responsible for what they produce. Welfare, WIC, Food Stamps should be a temporary fix. Get off your asssss, get a job, pay your bills, and take care of your family. I have not one shred of sympathy for them. BTW, what do you think goes on at 2 AM when someone angel is on parole. Tough Shiitt!

The ravine flyer was built with the owner's money. And I don't think he asked for tax abatement or any other special financial consideration.

Why must a child in the inner city be on the streets or at a community center all the time? Do these kids have hobbies, interests, do they read books, watch television? I really do not understand the need to be in a group and out on the street at all hours of the night.

Cause you can't find or deal drugs watching tv or reading a book. Hell, most haven't read a book front to back since 3rd grade which is still their reading level now.
