aha. nice article.

This one filled a gap in a comment on a prior thread.

megathrusts in region:

1868 Peru, & N. Chile altiplano arc junction box, a few hours apart, SW vector, arc runout 10-15m & Mw approx. 9.1

1877 N. part of Altiplano arc covering Junction box again with S. terminus reaching arc @ Lascar volcano. WNW vector, backarc runout to about 20m. Mw about 9.0.

The vector of this thrust is WSW indicating a part of the junction box in the 1868 footprint.

Fun bit to watch in the Altiplano is the central & S. part of the altiplano backarc basin covered by a large thrust fault in the forearc in the 1920s. reported as 8.3 and upgraded to 8.7 (small tsunami). Magma filled fracture in the arc have already been squeezed flat with volcanoes either dormant or with fizzy steam as a result of the "zit effect". Megathrust is due in this part of the Altiplano in decades (being a backarc basin, not sure which decade). Will eventually cover area from Lascar (N.) to N. part of the Rioja range just S. of the high volcanoes in the S. Altiplano. Runout will be backarc (20 or more M) with runout vector most likely W., but may be diverted to WNW by overpressure from Rioja range further south. expect Mw to be somewhere between 9.1 to 9.4 and possibly a mite bigger if the backarc runout is bigger (with tsunami height increase to match).

Have a nice day: Ag
