Handy article now that the Smithsonian is offline due to a re run of the American civil war...(I side with the Yankees).

It is interesting that the rule of thumb by local Russian volcanologists appears to be being borne out.

Kliuchevskoi was dormant during the Tolbachik fissure eruption (total volume of eruptive products unknown), and following the close of the Taolbachik eruption, the activity @ Kliuchevskoi started back up.

Also of note is that Kiliuchevskoi & Tolbachik are both in the 1737 long runout sector (bloody great big tsunami)of the megathrust rebound quake. The long fractures filled with magma @ the base of the crust injected upward from the base crustal magma discs appear to be being squeezed into the volcanoes preferentially along both edges of the segment. Still no sign of major activity @ Ushkovsky, but there was a minor event after the 1737 event in the 1800s or so. The leading S. edge of the segment is easy to spot (Bezymianny).

Activity seems to resemble pushing a brick back into a wall by jogging alternate corners & squeezing out the goop filling the gap.

Kliuchevskoi now appears to be the current squeeze out point & may be rather busy in the next 6 months.

Thanks for the info.

Oops. almost forgot; Shiveluch is north of the 1737 event footprint & is part of the Kommandorsky seismic gap. There is still magma squeezing into shiveluch via kommandorsky, but that space needs quite close watching as the backarc basin backfault @ Koryaky indicates that the backarc basin is still spreading & the runout in a SE. directed megathrust event may be very large.

Have a nice day: Ag
