A remarkably serendipitous story considering a report supposedly stating a depotit of organisms from "space" collected by a balloon at 25Km. said balloon collected organisms were partally oxidised dried & deflated bacteria & occasionally smashed cell walls of the same group of bacteria.
Considering that tropical overshot top anvil thunderstorms in the tropics can reach to 40Km and extensive lateral flow occurs from the anvil (average height 30Km), the organisms collected would have had a rather mundane tropical rainforest origin via microburst sweep & updraught into developing storm cell clusters at the end of the day.
Diatoms are rather more difficult to loft via thunderstorms but can easily be swept up in a pond emptied by tornados.
They appear to be at least as tough as desmids (a close unshelled relative). so the possibility of them arriving intact & alive at a new address is quite high assuming that they were not flash boiled & fried in the ignimbrites from the Taupo Oranui eruption.
Nice to see the location of the rift lake. That was missing from the maps (in my locality) before now.
Have a nice day: Ag

Do you think it's possible we could launch all the Maoris into the sky so they will land somewhere else?
