While it is probably true that dependency on tourism is unsustainable, the irony is that the ideas offered up in the article were still destination oriented. This is just as unsustainable as traditional tourism. It still involves millions of people driving up here in largely low mpg vehicles to take advantage of what this area has to offer.

The other irony is that the town is embarking on a 17 million dollar project to speed tourists through town without considering what this will do to the quality of life of those impacted by that. Even more autos will make Elkhorn Avenue even less pleasant, dangerous, and unhealthy. Health, wellness, and fitness would be enhanced by less emphasis on the auto and more emphasis on shuttling, biking, and walking.

Well put tstreet. You mentioned the traffic situation. I am still trying to figure out what the advantage will be of having 10,000 (just a figure) cars going one way as opposed to two ways. The town is proposing a multi level parking structure at the visitors center when in fact the one at the fairgrounds is hardly ever utilized. Maybe licensed engineers should be left with the task of making these decisions instead of our politicians.
