Supervolcanoes are the result of a pluton that has advanced through the crust until finally unroofing & exsolving magmatic gas @ the surface. As a result each pluton only erupts ONCE. Postcaldera eruptions occur in the timespan after the initial breakout eruption as the roof of the pluton is still thick, still solid enough to fracture & still able to drive degassed magma to the surface via domes & flows.
Yellowstone has had 4 supervolcano eruptions.
One being 2 million years ago. The 2nd being a few thousand years after the first forming a 2nd caldera smaller then the 1st on the E. edge of the caldera.
A large eruption (not a supervolcano) appeared forming a 20Km caldera in island park in the N. part of the original caldera about 1.5 million years ago. This caldera was the result of a small pluton emergent through the hot crust under the original caldera.
640,000 years ago a supervolcano eruption occurred in the SW side of the Yellowstone caldera as a result of a pluton unroofing. A few hundred to a few thousand years later a 2nd pluton unroofed in the NE part of the yellowstone caldera.
150,000 years ago a small pluton came up in the SW. part of the Yellowstone caldera under a thick ice cap. This mixed with the residue from the 600,000 year eruption (still hot) & produced 1000Km3 of domes & flows under the ice cap while the overlying crust was cooled & rigid enough to fracture.
Nowadays Yellowstone is still hot but being an interglacial the lid over the magma is still plastic & is being heated by occasional basalt intrusions breaking through under it from the snake river plain hotspot trail which has plated over most of island park under basalt.
The OLD Yellowstone caldera is now definitely dead & will cool & the same rate as the island park supervolcano of ~2million years ago.
Story is not yet over....
A new pluton is now advancing through the crust NE of the Yellowstone caldera centred approximately over Mt.washburn on the NE. rim. The crust of the NE caldera has uplifted damming Yellowstone lake & producing a major waterfall outside of the rim. The heat is now high enough to drive hot springs outside of the caldera such as @ mammoth (fed by water through a deep fault). The pluton is a big one caused by fresh catastrophic melt of the deep crust over the Yellowstone hotspot & will form a new supervolcano when it finally breaks through the rigid upper crust.
This tilt from the advancing pluton is causing the fluid residual magma to flow en masse SE in Yellowstone caldera which appears nowadays nearly flat. as a result of slump uplift of the SE caldera roof. Shallow fractures in the plastic lid are keeping geysers going @ present.
Dying definitely; dead absolutely not.
The Mt washburn pluton is currently @ mid crustal depth close to 30-40Km down & will take a while to reach the surface.
Expect a few more domes & flows under an ice lid during the NEXT glacial period, and likely a supervolcano event in the beginning of the next interglacial.
Have a nice day: Ag
