Interesting article.

Major volcano to watch is Towada, recharged via magma rich fractures @ the base of the crust following the crustal relaxation of Tohoku by the megathrust earthquake & tsunami of 11 march 2011.

Volcanism @ Towada would be the result of the squeeze in of the arc during the recompression phase which would transfer magma to the least compressed bit under Towada & Iwate volcanoes.

Last megathrust event, the Jogan tsunami of 869AD led to a major eruption of Towada about a century later (leaving a distinctive marker tephra above the Jogan tsunami deposits on Sendai & Ishinomaki plains.

As for Kyushu on the map in the article. Sakurajima is active, still squeezing in a long fracture from the last megathrist event with nowadays Aso mostly dormant, Ibusuki now dormant, & Kirishima, Unzen & Kikai in a repose phase following a rrelatively recent eruption. All these volcanoes are in the least compressed bit (E margin) of the Ryukyu backarc basin, with a megathrust earthquake due when the last volcano goes dormant.
For the record, the last megathrust event @ Kyushu (Ryukyu) had a BC date with the volcanoes erupting magma rich fractures since that date with only the last long thin remmants remaining.

Kyushu has more of a problem from impending tsunami than from volcanism right about now, but while Sakurajima remains active the Kyushu Japanese can breathe easy (albeit coughing up gritty bits) for the near future.

have a nice day: Ag
