Looks like phreatic activity. Eruptive activity is likely in the near future as phreatics are from release of steam from an inflating edifice through dilating cracks.
Should be another dome event, but will keep watching that space. Interesting bit is the later reports on the composition of the magma (lava) making up the dome(s). The bulk composition is Andesite, but remove all the pretty crystals & the liquid part is actually rhyolite. It appears that the bulk of the rhyolite fraction was actually the partially molten walls of the magma filled fracture that originally held all the magma that erupted through the volcano via a small magma chamber in the last few centuries.
This situation has appeared @ other volcanoes in the past such as Asama (S.Tohoku, Japan), which erupted rhyolite magma in the decade before the 9.0 struck Tohoku (11/03/2011).
A similar situation occurs @ the Augustine lava dome complex in Alaska Which appears to have been dormant for a long time before its current eruption series. In the case of Augustine, the volcano appears to have a long thin stock type crystal filled rhyolite magma of bulk andesite composition & is being intruded @ the base of the crust by new magma which adds gas to the system & pushes the top of the magma chamber out to the surface forming a new dome.
Merapi is a volcano that has been active for a very long time and appears to be an analogue of the japanese volcano Asama rather than Augustine. The composition of the recent crater forming ash eruption product is currently unknown. It may be considerably more basaltic than the last dome products indicating that a new magma filled fracture may have reconnected to the Merapi system, ejecting the original contents of the thin magma chamber.
A large megathrust earthquake & bloody great big tsunami @ the Java backarc basin is likely sometime in the next few centuries. Another indicator of the late stage of recompression is the tectonic overpressure of the arc graben leading to another of the Lusi hills popping up north of Arjuno-Welirang volcano.
Have a nice day: Ag
