Shortly before the earthquake struck, NHK broke off regular programming to warn that a strong quake was due to hit.
Since the earthquake was broadly in the area of the 9th magnitude Earthquake that caused the widely devastating tsunami, scientists may have had the area widely instrumented. Interesting that the quake was successfully predicted.
